Now, I must say about the Anime Classics line, it's too vague for titles to get released nowadays in that category (Master of Martial Hearts being a good example). Anime Classics should be for ACTUAL classics, well-received series, older titles originally licensed by Funimation, and license rescues, not best-sellers since they could be just recently made series (Master of Martial Hearts being a good example because it is no way an actual classic at all nor a well-received series). If they were to use Anime Classics for best-sellers (whether or not they are well-received or actual classics), they should discontinue it an re-brand it something like "Funimation Best Sellers".

If it wasn't "well-received" how did it manage to sell better than other more critically praised anime?
Not really contradicting you on the Classics label being a little contenous (then again, is it any worse than Legends for Bandai? That had some not-so-legendary series) Just pointing out that selling well sort of implies being well-received.
English dubs rule! Spread the love, raise the profit, get more anime.

If that's the case, why not Funimation split Anime Classicsinto two lines: one is Anime Classics for well-received series, older series licensed by Funimation (originally licensed by Funimation), and license rescues. two is something like Funimation Best Sellers for best-selling series (which is what Master of Martial Hearts should fall in if the Funimation Best Sellers was established).

Well it was funny you mentioned this, but in an interview with ANN from Dec 2nd a person from Funimation (can't remember if it was Adam Sheehan or Lance Heiskell) talked about how "Classics" were picked. Basically, they said the Classics line is supposed to have a wide variety of shows in as many genres as possible. Since certain genres fell out of style in recent years (the one they pointed to was the old school non-mech scifi) they had to dig deeper to find Classics to fill that niche. (So everybody knows that's a paraphrase of something I listened to over 2 months ago so the explanation may be a little off) Maybe Masters of Martial Hearts isn't exactly a Classic by your standards, but it could be considered a well bought show that filled a niche in their Classic line. That would be my guess as to why that particular show is in there.
Overall I gotta side with the starter of this thread. Funimation's classics line is far from, in reality its a "Best Sellers" line for the most part. They do mix older anime in there with it obviously to keep up the ruse, but yeah, overall its really more of a "here are the shows that made us the most money" line.
Thus its only fair people debate the quality of set "classics" when one can easily argue not all anime in set line are such.
Also, sounding totally elitist here, but.... The only way Master of Martial Hearts is a classic is the same way as Eiken, a classic example of how NOT to make an anime.
But I digress, as said the line does have a decent amount of actual classics in it ( FLCL, Bubblegum Crisis) so I'll be supporting the actual classic/retro series the line releases, everything else...meh, to each their own I guess, but no thanks.

Don't forget. Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you.
As long as you remember her, you are not alone.
puts on old man face* I blame the MTV and the interwebs.
But yes, it is sad that arguably when it comes to media in general people will always go for the most base, shallow programming over other types of media. But such is the world we live in, not much can be done..well not much without world domination *glares evilly, beings manacle laughter*
But on a more serious note, I do hope that the "Classics" like will improve as it goes on. Personally my favorite line of Bests will always be the late Bandai's "Anime Legends series" But who knows, over time Funi could become just as good if not better, guess we will have to wait and see.
Back to classics, really looking foward to the re-release of the original Tenchi Muyo OVA's. And hope Funimation gets more 80's & 90's anime to add to the classics line later one.

I, for one, welcome the continuation of the death and destruction of words losing their meaning. Bandai Ent managed to totally destroy the meaning of what qualifies as a legend and Funi doing the same with classic. Thankfully the word epic is already overused and used for everything, so they can't destroy that word any further than its already lost its meaning. I mean, call it what it is. Don't need to attach fancy (or ugly in SAVE's case) labels to things. I mean, anime is already devalued to a point of no return, let's not take some of the English language with it.

I could not agree with you more, some words and phrases have been so overused, they really don't mean anything anymore. Liking telling someone you L--- them. You can say it, but it doesn't really mean much these days.
*and no thats not a typo, lol*
But yeah, I agree with MP, lets drop labels all together, that sounds like a good idea. No more classics, no more problem.

It doesn't mean much if it's not true. If it's true, it means a whole lot and doesn't get old. IMHO.
Sorry, no opinion about Classics though. Well, I guess I do agree that that word gets overused.
I'm right behind you...
I'm honestly amazed at how seriously people take these labels...even going so far as to say that it has any effect at all on the English language. XD XD
Not to sound mean, but that's rather absurd.
It's just a name...and likely to mainly attract those who are new to the game. There's nothing wrong with it...at least in my opinion.
