If you want to experience Hiromu Arakawa's original storyline from the fma manga, then go with brotherhood. if you watch the original fullmetal alchemist, there are lots of original stories amongst the earlier episodes which follow the manga, but halfway through it branches off into its own story. i prefer fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, but that's just personal preference. and if you aren't going to be reading the manga, then i suggest brotherhood because it is the entire, actual story.

I recommend you watch both series online and then buy the one you enjoyed more. You can watch both series online through Funimation for free legally. Personally I enjoyed Brotherhood a lot more, from the characters, art/animation style and plot. The original has a slightly better OST although Brotherhood's soundtrack is still decent.

If you really don't want to watch them before you buy one, then just go with Brotherhood. It is about 90% accurate to the manga story line unlike the original which tells its own story.

I think you should see both and get both.

I prefer the first series, but Brotherhood also has some great moments as well, and IMHO a better ending. I'd recommend getting Brotherhood now on Bluray, and later if you want you can see if the original gets a Bluray re-release and pick up that one too. Either way you go you are going to get a really good show.

go with brotherhood, it follows the manga and you wont feel disappointed after watching it

the first series kinda went downhill when they got to greeds part of the story...also to properly end the first series you are practically required to watch the movie

Go with Fullmetal Alchemist. I feel that the episodes are alot better and gets more emotional. Everytime someone says that brotherhood is better I ask why and its always the same responce "because it's more like the manga." FMA from beginning to end was great but with brotherhood I didn't really like it til about episode 12. I will agree with vampire about having to watch the movie to properly end it but even if you dont i still think its better.

Both Series has their better qualities. Brotherhood is the real original because it is based on the manga and the ending is how the creater intended it.

The other Fma has more fillers and for people who read the manga its cool because you have no idea whats going to happen.
My personel fav is brotherhood, i think it has a happier ending and it has alot more suspence thats just my opinion.

Watch them both and decide which you would want to get into more.

I think you should get Brotherhood. They both are rocking animes, but I like the original storyline much more. tongue

I'm a Brotherhood fan, but ironically enough I own part of the original series! I honestly might tell you to go with the first series because the DVDs come with the coolest little booklets. I will say I prefer Brotheroood's pacing to that of the original, which I felt was slow and full of filler. Maybe watch both online and pick?
