Is Dragonball Multiverse legal?

Dragonball Multiverse http://www.dragonball-multiverse.com/en/partenaires.html is a large fan based comic that has been going on for a few years now, but over time i wonder if there blurring the lines between running a comic that promotes a franchise and basically setting up their own useing the DB brand.

I orginally didn't have problems with the comic but I have doubts over a few factors, one is setting up a donation to fund for their conventions, going to the Japan expo for example to sell copies of their multiverse comic. That idea i think is becomming misleading given the presentation of the drawings is by gogeta jr but the specials are drawn by lesser artists and are there at the convention to give the impression they are just as talented. I know this as I had a friend who went to japan 2011 exo and expressed his surprise when finding out the content inside the chapter wasn't like anything on the cover.

The other devlopment is many of DBM partner sites are links to a site made by the group called http://www.amilova.com/en/xp_gold.html where as you can tell though membership is free, there are upgrade accounts that you have to pay for, as well as links to ebay to sell their own stuff.

I may be wrong but I think its a issue worth raising if the makers of DBM are useing Dragonball to advertise their own products. If people want to add their own comments that's fine, I'll be happy to throw in my own evidence on this debate.

Re: Is Dragonball Multiverse legal?

No, I do not believe it is. It is an unlicensed work using very profitable licensed characters, and is not covered by fair-use laws (As a parody would be). It's a French Fancomic that is based on a Japanese Manga, so I'm sure a plethora of laws are technically being violated.

That being said, It's not an issue that anybody has really addressed, and I doubt that they will. As long as DBM continues to be a free web comic, I doubt that TOEI will get involved. Now the second that they start selling stuff on their site, I bet Toei would have it taken down. That is most likely why they only sell printed copies of their manga and artbooks at Japan Expo; There's no real record of them distributing it for money, that way.

I actually hit their booth at Japan Expo and picked up a copy of the DBM artbook. The guy that sold it to me was kind of rude; He ignored me for a bit, gave me the artbook, and took my money without a word. Sheesh, I wouldn't mind a smile for 12 Euro tongue
