Hi there link2hyrule, and welcome to the forum. Hope you stick around and enjoy our forum. ^_^
Now, in answer to your question - yes, the Blurays are indeed cancelled, and show no sign of resuming any time soon. They may in the future, or there may be a new approach taken to the series on Bluray, but it'll most likely be a while before that happens. So you can either wait till that happens, or go for the Dragon Boxes like you mentioned, just depends on how soon you just have to have the show.
Oh, and also, there's the Season Sets which are a cheaper option for sure...but the Dragon Boxes are the higher quality product, so if you don't mind spending the extra cash, those are the way to go, yes.
I actually started with getting the Orange Boxes, but then I found out they cropped the image to make it widescreen (stupid idea, btw), so I found out they didn't do that with the Dragon Boxes and decided to go for those when I heard about the Blu Ray project. If it is indeed cancelled, then I'll just go with the Dragon Boxes.
What a shame. I actually heard good things about the Blu-Rays, and was thinking about picking one up when they got later into the series. I won't even bother now though since I already have the Vegeta/Saiyan saga in several different formats. These really must have tanked for FUNi to pull them off the shelves--it seems they've been doing a lot in the last few years to clean up their bad rep with DBZ releases (cancelled UUEs, orange bricks, numerous inconsistencies, etc). Oh well, hopefully the Dragon Box surveys they've been carrying out will lead to more of those being brought over. I would personally like to see Dragon Ball come over, but a shorter series like DBGT might be the safer bet.
If you are planning on getting the Dragon Boxes, then I'd advise that you get a move-on with that. They are a discontinued item, and no longer in print (unless something changed), they were only printed as a limited run collectible set, and are now pretty much limited to what stock is left in various warehouses.
This has got to restart FUNi, you were doing a fantastic job with the Blu-Ray level sets, I bought all 2 releases, and I was planning on completing the collection! I loved what you did, the picture was crystal clear, the audio tracks were crisp. How can it be a complete DragonBall Z collection if you're missing Bruce Faulconer's awesome work? I think the Dragon Boxes were an inferior set; the picture is not even close to how awesome the levels are.
You could do a limited run for the Blu-rays, and take pre-orders up first and make a supply and demand sort of scenario.
I couldn't afford collecting the Dragon Boxes back when you released them in NA, but I'm glad I didn't spend my money on them because they aren't the be all and end all everyone thinks they are.
I have hope in Gen, I know he can bring the awesome remastering(Levels) of DragonBall Z back to the table.
I also request the original DragonBall be done the same way as the levels.
I just bought DragonBall GT: Complete series to show my support for the DragonBall franchise, I grew-up with you guys and now I can actually buy my childhood series.
I don't mind if you do DBGT as Levels either.
But it's now 2013, Blu-ray has been around for a while and us DBZ complete fans have nothing to show for it. I consider DragonBall Kai to be a product for a different generation, it also cut what I loved about the series and its filler.
Come on Funi, now I'm wondering if you'll ever finish releasing the perfect edition of DragonBall Z before I'm old and gray.
I don't care if it takes you 8 years to remaster everything the way you were doing for the Levels, as long as they keep coming at a reasonable interval, say 6-8 months apart, I'd be fine with it.
I am a huge fan of Dragon ball among countless in the world who grew up with this fantastic story. I would like to express my great disappointment since the suspension of the blu-ray Level sets. Dragon ball z is the most popular and the most profitable manga in the world "The franchise has sold more than 25 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in its lifetime, becoming the best-selling anime series of all time". A lot of people would be willing to pay double the price in order to acquire the entire anime in blu-ray format which literally transcended the vision and brought out the essence.
You have created a joy of such magnitude that the frustration is in equal proportion. I beg you, on behalf of all the fans, to complete the perfect work you started.
Will the two volumes that haven't been released but have been done ever get released? (One had a mock up of Krillin on the front cover) and they're on the playstation network just not on disc.

Eh, you never know. They might return to the Blu-Ray releases at some point.
Though it has been a while since they stopped.
