Dragon Ball Z Series coming to Blu-Ray

Cannot no one posted this yet but here it is:

Quote:
Dragon Ball Z Sees November Release on High-Definition Blu-ray Disc™ Format

Flower Mound, TX (July 21, 2011) – FUNimation® Entertainment is announcing that it is bringing the first installment of the anime phenomenon Dragon Ball Z to Blu-ray disc for the first time this fall.

Among the most prized in the FUNimation catalog, the studio has used the newest technology available to remaster in high-definition and digitally restore the 291 episode series. FUNimation worked with Dallas-based ANDTRANSFER for the digital film transfer. FUNimation previously worked with the post-production house to remaster the series for the season set releases on DVD. The transfer was performed by nationally-recognized colorist Steve Franko and supervised by FUNimation, which then finished the rest of the restoration process.

Today's state-of-the-art systems offer tools that allow restoration teams to make a wide range of repairs and focus on more difficult tasks which, in the end, deliver a clean product that faithfully presents the original version and measures up to the high-quality standards of HDTV and Blu-ray.

Once again, the Dragon Ball Z series was digitally transferred from the original Japanese 16mm film frame by frame at 1080p. Developments in restoration software gives mastering artists more to work with when they apply tools to even out film grain and remove fading, film cuts and other visual anomalies. As a result, the viewer will see brighter, clearer colors, less variance in quality between scenes, and a sharper image.

“Working with a very old and fragile source film presented a number of challenges for the restoration process,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and president at FUNimation Entertainment. “Our purpose was to restore the series as accurately as possible, to what it must have been like to see it when it was originally mastered, and preserve the charm of the animation. After all, it is of a particular time and place.” After debuting in 1989, Dragon Ball Z has become an iconic anime series. The franchise has sold more than 25 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in its lifetime, becoming the best-selling anime series of all time.

Dragon Ball Z is the explosive sequel to Dragon Ball. The series follows the adventures of Goku and his son Gohan as they team up with their friends to battle evil forces throughout the universe to protect their beloved planet Earth. The first season covers the Vegeta Saga and chronicles the introduction of one of Dragon Ball Z's main characters, Vegeta.

This restored edition also features the original U.S. voice actors as well as the original FUNimation soundtrack – all in lossless Dolby® TrueHD.

Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1 includes the first 17 episodes on two discs with over 400 minutes of action and among the extras included on this release is a feature that looks at the restoration and remastering processes.

Dragon Ball Z Level 1.1 will be available at major retailers nationwide on November 8, 2011.

No, thank you. Do not want.

Also, is this in widescreen? Sure sounds like it. Would be really disappointing, even if the remaster is kinda already guaranteed to be inferior to the D-Box video.

Though, I don't necessarily want to bash FUNimation too hard on this topic since they already gave us what we want.

All I really want to know is if it is going to be remastered in 4:3 or 16:9. If it's going to be widescreen with the top and bottom cropped out, I'll stick to my orange collection.

If it's made in 4:3, then I will pick up the blu-rays if it gets a release in Australia!

This has no appeal to me unless they were going to re-dub the entire series... Ah well... That and if the remaster is actually good...

I'm not going to get this release. I mean we have the singles, the Ultimate uncuts, the Season sets, the Dragon Boxes, Dragon Ball Z Kai with Yamamoto music and Dragon Ball Z Kai with Kikuchi music. What more can you milk from Z? I'm perfectly fine with my Dragon Boxes and Kai sets.

Let's see now

-17 Episodes in 1 set = Strike 1

-TV score as an option = Strike 2

-Same masters as the orange bricks = Strike 3

I'll be sticking with my Dragon Box & Kai sets thank you very much. Once those sets are fully released and in my home then I'm done with DBZ.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Series coming to Blu-Ray

What is this? I don't even...

Didn't Funi learn their lesson with the orange bricks? We don't want them to go through and mess with the footage. Why do I get the feeling that this will be another Orange Brick Fiasco? The press release even says that the set will come with an extra feature on the restoration process, just like the first orange brick did.

The last Dragonbox isn't even out and there are already plans to pull more money from the series. And what's worse is the fact that they are trying to resell it to us in smaller chunks than the last two releases. 17 episodes? Honestly? You want me to buy a 291 episode series in 17 episode chunks?

I'm with Bebop on this one. I will only consider buying these sets if there is a complete and total redub, and if they are pretty cheap (like the One Piece seasons). Other than that, I'll be happy with my dragonboxes. As a Dragonball fan, there is only one thing that I want from Funi. I want Dragonboxes for Dragonball, GT, and the movies. I'll buy whatever new dragonboxes Funi puts out, but these Bluray sets aren't in my purchasing future.

Wow this is already getting a lot of hate when Funi can always surprise us, but I agree that a redub would be the only way for me to re-buy it as I have been getting the dragon box's, but even then I'm not fond of all of the new voices.

The episode counts are a little ridiculous too only 17 episodes for their oldest property that has already been released many times, and that's almost 300 episodes.

I'm really...kinda worried about this release. I just can't see it doing well for FUNi, but hopefully it does. That's the only thing that worries me about it. All this 'backlash' on the 'RUINED FOREVER' level is amusing to me because, dear GAWD...we have the series in complete two ways already guys. It's not like we have to buy this release. If you don't want it, stick with the Season Sets or the Dragon Boxes either one, or both even.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Series coming to Blu-Ray

What I'm wondering is if this isn't really about another incarnation of Dragonball Z saturating store shelves and more about proving to the Japanese that they're capable of doing HD remastering in-house. This could open up a world of possibilities if they manage to pull off an awesome transfer.
