What is THINK?
THINK.Prom is a pledge program based on the simple practice to “Party Safe, Party Sober”. The pledge program is designed to be used year-round with an emphasis on prom. Host a pledge event at your school by following the tips below.
Schools participating in the THINK.Prom program receive a pledge pack that includes a giant pledge signing banner, individual pledge sheets, a powerful DVD to show in the classroom or to an entire assembly, a set of six prom safety posters, pledge ID cards, an event hand stamp, and giveaways such as penny stickers, party mints, and rear-view mirror tags. Schools also receive safety posters for spring break and graduation. In addition, students who sign the pledge have an opportunity for website interactivity on think.madd.org.
The video scrapbook contest is just one perk students can access through the think.madd.org website. Other rewards students can receive for making good choices include free downloads from Napster, chat text messaging, screensavers, avatars, and cell phone wallpapers.
How to Bring THINK.Prom to Your School
You'll need about $1 per student to make THINK.Prom the legendary event that you know it can be. So short of playing the banjo at a bus stop for change, you might need a little help putting that kind of bank together. Welcome to your first course in Sales.
This information will get you started so you can promote THINK.Prom to your school and your community.
Take it to your leader: Find out who's in charge of your prom. It could be your principal, a counselor, or a volunteer faculty member. You want the person who decides how to spend the prom money.
Do your homework: Don't just walk up to the Prom Committee and tell them they need to hand over their budget to you. They're going to have questions, which means you need to have answers. Print off the Pledge Pack information sheet and take it to the Prom Committee or your teacher. Visit think.madd.org for more information on the Pledge Packs.
Be persistent: Tell your school how important it is to support students who want to have a memorable prom without drinking or doing other drugs.
Okay, be annoying: Well, maybe "creatively diligent." Drop daily hints. Come up with clever reminders. Get a dozen people to call your prom sponsor - all in the same hour. Don't give up if the initial response is negative. If your prom has been done the same way for years (and maybe even by the same person), keep in mind that people need time to get on board with new ideas. Go back to the facts. Get more students behind you. And keep asking.
Two words . . . Bake Sale: Not every school is rolling in cash, so it's up to you and your crew to come up with some creative fundraising. Would some local businesses like to show their support while getting their names in front of high school students? Think about what's in it for the person or business who donates their hard-earned money to support THINK.Prom, and then sell them on those benefits. Businesses always appreciate some well-deserved thanks-hold a press event or have students sign a thank you banner. And if businesses won't ante up, then dream up other ways to raise money through a raffle or car wash.
