I just read an article in the magazine Otaku USA's cosplaying section about crossplay. I was curious if anyone here is into this and what your motivations were for doing it and what your experiences were like.

I've never even cosplayed, so I wouldn't know what to say except I think it's amazing seeing people taking that extra step - all because they really adore their favorite opposite-sex characters.
I think the closest I would ever come to crossplaying would be throwing on Yuki Nagato's witch outfit and sticking a cat plushy on my shoulder.
Probably half of my cosplays are cross including my latest. My motivations are always the same regardless of the character's gender - the costume design. If the costume looks fun to make and I can reasonably pull it off, then I go for it.
I try my best to look like a guy, but in the end, accuracy of the costume and the overall look matter to me most.
I think guys that crossplay for reals are awesome. (Sailor Bubba and Man Fei do not fall into this category.)
I agree with this. I think that in our society there is a strong bias against cross dressing by men, so that makes the crossplay even more daring when it is successfully executed.

Does haruhi fujioka count XD I've never cosplayed, though it looks awesomely fun, I've been thinking about cosplaying haruhi for a while. I wanted to do her dress and pants shopping outfit instead of the male uniform ............hm, wouldn't be cross then i suppose
"I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you."
You know what they say about you choosing your friends? It's a lie. You don't really choose them, they just happen.
"I'm not short! >.< I'm funsized. ^-^ "
"Don't piss me off! I'm in a bad enough mood without your help!"
Crossplaying is, in my opinion, more fun that normal cosplaying.
I just wish that some of those dudes in dresses would take extra work to shave their legs...
I have a fairly close friend that crossplays. His costume closet is most fans dream including nearly EVERY Haruhi Suzimaya costume available. He does it because its just fun and he feels like the girls get the better costumes. He has a friend that he goes with the cons with that does it for the attention, especially from the girls. He jokes constantly he cant get a girl to notice him unless he is wearing a dress.
Neither of these two could EVER pass as real girls but at least they try hard and have fantastic costumes.
What urks the heck out of me is Ive been to three cons with both of them. Its really pathetic the criticism they get from ignorant people.

Unfortunately that's just how society is - it's okay for girls to dress up like men, but it's ridiculous if a man dresses up like a girl. But that won't stop me from going as Yuki Nagato if I ever get the chance!
Wait you mean to tell me Yuki Nagato is a girl..
The best case of that criticism was when a guy smarted off to one of them while wearing a kilt. He is bashing crossplayers while wearing a school uniform ROFLMAO!!.

I have never cosplayed at all, but if I did I would definitely choose to portray a male character (I am female).
I think boys that crossplay as female characters are awesome - and hot. Anime has a kind of androgyny to the aesthetic that lends itself nicely to crossplay in the first place. Perhaps part of the reason I like the idea of crossplay - especially when boys do - is the sheer guts it takes to do such a thing, because you know they are going to take a lot of crap from what Audri correctly labelled "ignorant people."
What could be more attractive than creativity, open-mindedness, and bravery (and geekiness)?
