Funimation in my opinion did'nt do enough to make Case Closed a hit YET. This anime could be up with (not better than) Dragonball Z. Yeah I get they tried the boxsets, they did the viridian boxes, and they had it on adult swim. It was just disappointing, I think Case Closed just now started to get a little buzz, but now the majority of the people are bummed that after season 5 it stops. The movies were great and defineatly opened more peoples eyes about the show. I bet that after the movies released more people started buying the episodes. I know I can never know if that's true, but I feel pretty confident that the sales went up, but I could be wrong. I think nows the time to do something with Case Closed. The movies gave it some hype so I think a safe investment would be liscensing one or two more seasons and maybe one or two more movies now that Case Closed is more known. If the sales are not overwhelmingly better then Funimation could pull the plug. Does anyone know when the liscence for case closed ends? If Funimation is just gonna sit Case Closed on the shelf it would be great if they just dropped it when the liscence ends. Maybe then somebody else like viz could pick them up. This is just my opinion.
It would be nice to see a famous detective vs. a famous theif! From what I have read from summaries of the movie, it would be interesting to see the different worlds collide. If they do decide to dub the other Case Closed moives, that will be even better since I really want to see more of Kaito Kid!
I would of asked Sophie when their distribution license expires if I wasn't so sure she wouldn't be able to tell me.
And one thing that bothers me is how Kodocha (another series that was canceled) is still being licensed even though FUNimation hasn't dubbed any new episodes in years. I hope they don't plan on doing this to Case Closed... well, in a way, they are doing that, but they did release never-before-seen content last year (movies).
I wasn't saying I hope FUNi doesn't relicense it. I know they won't relicense it if they don't dub more movies. I'm hoping they drop it if they don't plan on doing anything.
My best guess on when they first licensed Case Closed would be 2003, and from the research I've done, most licenses last five years, so it would of ended in 2008. They would of had to renew it in 2008, which makes the expiration date sometime in 2013. If they don't plan on doing anything, I really hope FUNi drops it before 2013, . The longer they wait, the less chance we have of the series being picked up by another company.
While this is depressing, it's good to know. Not that we weren't already told, but it certainly does feel more official now. Thanks for sharing the info.
And honestly, I'm still going to hold on to vain hope that someone will do with Conan what they did with Super GALS - box sets that are sub-only. I just want to own all of the series, nice and legal. Sob.
Hopefully if they release the movies they actually include some kind of special features. For some reason, the DVDs only include Trailers and Character Profiles; perhaps they should have some bloopers or interviews with the cast of the English dub about what went wrong with the show or something. I just think that it would be kind of cool to get that kind of documentary on the show, even if the video was only like 10 min long.
Well if this series seems to not do too well, I would think Viz might end up doing the dub among other things if popularity came back to the series, but since Japan and our economy are about to go into a depression soon, this could be the end of the line for having to continue to have this series, besides Bleach is already in the evidience of a long term break with the anime due to the economy and Earthquake, and I am sure this series might do the same.
Hell if I know. I was previewing a bunch of HTML stuff to see what works here and something got posted.

その名は・・・ 名探偵コナン!
Sono na wa... Meitantei Conan!
His name is... Detective Conan!
Yeah that's true we should give it a year, but if they renew the liscence I would be really mad if thet continued to do nothing for the series.

So does anyone know when funimation's contract of Conan expires?
