Music & Anime: A Relationship – Caitlin Glass Talks Dubbed Music In Anime Pt 1

Caitlin Glass is an ADR director and voice actor for Funimation. You probably recognize her voice in your favorite titles like Fullmetal Alchemist, Ouran High School Host Club, Attack on Titan and One Piece, just to name a few. In addition to acting and directing, Caitlin has also adapted songs for Funimation dubs, often lending her voice to sing them as well.

You can catch her singing in shows like One Piece, Negima, School Rumble, BECK, Is This A Zombie?, Casshern Sins and many more! We’ve invited Caitlin to share with us the lesser-known process of adapting and recording English songs for our dubs. Hope you enjoy!

Music is a common theme in many anime titles, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on many musical series in a variety of different capacities. I’ve played singing characters, I’ve adapted lyrics into English for opening and closing themes, sung those themes, and more recently, had the immense challenge and pleasure of directing a musical show, one of my favorites, Show By Rock!!.

At conventions, I’m often asked to host a panel on dubbing music for anime, because not many people know how it is done, or just how much work is involved. With the home video release of Show By Rock!! Season 1 coming up next month (shameless plug- pre-order here!) and Season 2 currently streaming in simuldub format (another shameless plug- watch it here!), this seemed like the perfect opportunity to give you all an inside look at the process.

Show By Rock S2 No 2

*Cough shameless plug go watch Season 2 here cough*

As an ADR director, it’s always been my desire to have the shows I work on be in English, top to bottom; every theme song, every insert song, all of it. But in reality, that isn’t always possible, for a number of reasons, including, but not limited to, getting permission from the original record label and artist to dub their songs, acquiring the license for a show’s music, and having available time to do the meticulous work of adapting and recording the song or songs. I mean, what if my show is 13 episodes and each one has a different closing (I’m looking at you, Riddle Story of Devil…)? Also, the Japanese licensors may have many legitimate reasons for not wanting their music dubbed into English, and who am I to argue? Sometimes you can’t win ‘em all.

Episode 2 and 1 Endings of Riddle Story of Devil. It changes every time too!

For the sake of this article, however, let’s say Funimation does get permission, acquire the license, and have the time. What comes next? How does your favorite anime theme get transformed from Japanese to English? Well, over the next few weeks, I’m going to show you! Come back next week for more info about the adaptation process, and the following week to learn how we record and mix the music, complete with a live stream look into an actual music recording session. It’s going to be so much fun- I can’t wait! See you then!

From the talented minds of studio Gainax comes an adventurous collection of mysteries where real works of literature are woven into a supernatural world.

After his grandfather’s untimely death, Hugh Anthony Disward visits the estate of his inheritance where he discovers a library that’s out of this world. Embodying the archive is Dalian, a clever girl with a sharp tongue as biting as her sweet tooth. Circumstance leads to necessity, and she teaches Huey how to harness the power within—a handy trick to learn, seeing as it’s the only way to subdue the monsters brought forth by magical works of literature. These cursed tomes, known as Phantom Books, seem to always fall into the wrong hands. And while Huey and Dalian try to keep up with the paper trails, a friend from Huey’s childhood sits patiently in the depths of the mystic archives of Dantalian.

We’re excited to announce that we are bringing the classic hit anime, Wolf’s Rain, on Blu-ray for the first time! What is really great about this release is that Wolf’s Rain is only available on Blu-ray in US and Canada; Japan has yet to release Wolf’s Rain on Blu-ray. Funimation worked closely with the licensor on the up-conversion from standard definition to high definition in-house giving you the chance to watch Wolf’s Rain remastered in HD! Also, Wolf’s Rain was broadcasted on Adult Swim™ back in 2004, and many of you may remember watching this show late at night. Animated by the amazing Studio BONES that brought you Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, My Hero Academia, Blood Blockade Battlefront, Space Dandy, and more, Wolf’s Rain is an action adventure anime that you do not want to miss out on! Fans of shonen and seinen anime will realize how entertaining and unique this show is.

Wolf’s Rain Summary:

Paradise—a legend, a myth, and a hopeless dream in a world that has become a wasteland. It is not meant for everyone, only the wolves thought to be extinct yet still roam the lands. When the Flower Maiden awakens, the path to the end will open.

Kiba, a lone white wolf, wanders into a poverty stricken city on a quest. The scent of Lunar Flowers and the will to find Paradise is all he has. Along the way, he runs into other outcast wolves—Tsume, Hige, and Toboe, each with their own story and troubles. Fate bringing them together, they seek out the Flower Maiden, Cheza, and their way to Paradise. But, doing so is no simple matter. Up against a world that fears them and a man with mysterious abilities, their journey is overrun with challenges and worse—sacrifices. With limited time, they must fight to protect Cheza against everyone who seeks her and discover the hidden path to their destiny.

This group of broken souls will form a pack and take their journey to the doors of Paradise. But is it worth the end of the world?

Hetalia: The World Twinkle – Mad Lib Edition

Hetalia Day is behind us, but we’ve still got reason to celebrate! The brand-new Hetalia: The World Twinkle season 6 home video release (with the English dub!) comes out next week, so to commemorate another fun season of international hijinks and randomness, play our click and drag mad lib GIF game!

Mad libs are silly stories with a bunch of the words removed, and it’s your job to come up with the (nonsensical) replacements. If you’ve ever played these before, ours here is a little different—several words in this Hetalia story have been removed, and a bunch of possible options are shown here in animated GIFs. Take a screenshot of the GIFs below (or click and drag them) to find out what happens next!

(And feel free to share your results on social media with the tag #HetaliaMadLib!)
