Hal – the Movie – Contest Update

HAL

Last week, to celebrate our release of Hal – The Movie, we launched a contest to ask you to answer a pretty thought-provoking question: Do you think robots will ever be able to feel human emotions? Our contest is still running for one more week (get your entries in!), but we’ve gotten some awesome responses so far, and we wanted to highlight some of them—and to hear an expert weigh in!

Hal revolves around the unexpected love story between a human dealing with the loss of a loved one and a robot trying to understand human emotion. Although it’s a sci-fi anime film, it uses futuristic concepts and technology to tell a very human story, and it raises questions about our relationship with technology. Here’s a clip from the movie that helps to showcase the difficulty understanding human emotions.

Our contest is still running until September 9, but because of the amazing outpouring of passionate opinion on this topic, we thought we’d check in on the debate a little bit!

Since this is a rather heavy question that applies to lots of different academic fields, we asked an actual neuroscientist (and anime fan!), Twitter user @ultimatemegax, for his thoughts on the issue. If you’ve ever wanted a more in-depth look at how the sci-fi concepts of anime and manga can relate to the real world, check out his response!

Hal – The Movie Giveaway Contest

HAL

Looking for a new anime movie that’ll make you laugh and cry—and think? Then check out Hal – the Movie!

Hal is a gorgeously animated new film from Wit Studio, the rising star of the anime world that brought you Attack on Titan—and it’s a little different from your run-of-the-mill anime. The story uses sci-fi elements to tell a moving human story about love, loss, and artificial intelligence. After the death of her beloved boyfriend Hal, a young woman named Kurumi becomes a depressed recluse, and an android fashioned in Hal’s image is sent to console her as part of a new form of “robot therapy.” As she opens up to him, Robo-Hal learns what it means to be human– but nothing in their relationship is quite as it seems.

To celebrate the movie releasing on BD/DVD Combo on 9/2, we’re having a special contest! One lucky grand prize winner will win a copy of the movie plus an autographed poster. 4 random runners-up will receive an autographed copy of the poster. Just respond to the following question in the comments below, or post your answer to Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr with the hashtag #HalContest.

Here’s the question:

Do you think robots will ever be able to feel human emotions? Plenty of sci-fi titles—especially in anime—feature humanoid robots that develop lifelike emotions, either because of or despite their programming; certainly, the attempt to simulate or even replicate human feelings is an interesting problem in artificial intelligence. Do you think we’ll ever see robots who think and feel like us, or is this only the stuff of science fiction?

Our favorite entry will win the grand prize and 4 entries will be chosen at random to win the autographed poster. We’ll also share a little bit of the debate from both sides—please note that by entering, you give us permission to share your response. You have from now until Sept 9th, 2014 to enter. Click here for complete rules.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S – Accelerator’s Whisper Caption Contest

EDIT: Contest is now over! Scroll to the bottom to see winning entries.

In A Certain Scientific Railgun S, Accelerator is the overpowered and deadly antagonist that our heroine Misaka tries to stop from killing her tens of thousands of clones, all created from a dark scientific experiment. His ridiculously overpowered abilities (featured in our previous scientific writeup, A Certain Scientific Analysis S) and sinister cackle are so iconic that they’ve even spawned an internet meme—Accelerator’s Whisper, an image macro based on his initial introduction.

In honor of the release of Railgun S Part 2, we’re running a caption contest for this famous scene! One grand prize winner and four runners up will receive a prize pack of Railgun merchandise!

Here are shots of the scene, with the original dialogue:

railgun accelerator

That’s a pretty creepy and tense scene! But we like to think that the gravity also kind of lends itself to some great parodies. Here are some we loved from around the Internet:

Entries must be submitted by August 3rd, and winners will be announced August 4th. No image editing is required. We’ll share our favorites! Please note that by submitting an entry, you give us permission to share it on our social media channels. Click here for complete rules.
