During Anime Expo last year, we announced that we had acquired the rights to the romantic sci-fi film, Hal. From the studio behind Attack on Titan comes their first film ever, and wow is it stunning. Hal is a love story set in the near future, with sci-fi elements and gorgeous animation. Manga fans might recognize the character designs from Io Sakisaka, the manga artist and creator of Strobe Edge and Ao Haru Ride.
We’ve been pretty quiet about this film since we announced it last year, but now we’re pleased to tell you that the film will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD combo pack this fall; and yes, it will be a dual language release (that means it’ll have both a dubbed and subbed track). Here’s a promotional trailer.
From the studio behind Attack on Titan comes the directorial debut of a bold, new voice in the world of anime.
Kurumi’s heart was broken by the sudden death of her boyfriend in a tragic airplane accident. Forced to carry on without her beloved Hal, she fell into a reclusive and joyless existence. Kurumi had given up on the world, but a brilliant scientist devised a plan to win her back. By melding futuristic technology with the binary equivalent of human emotion, they created an ultra-lifelike robotic surrogate to take Hal’s place – and lure Kurumi from her shroud of solitude. Resistant at first, this shattered beauty slowly yielded to her feelings of longing – and took comfort in the company of a robot. Though their unique bond grew stronger with each passing day, Kurumi and Hal would soon discover that nothing about their artificial love story was quite as it seemed.
Hal‘s official North American subtitled film premiere will be at Sakuracon this Friday at 4:15 pm. Be sure to catch it if you’re attending!
When Luffy and his mates drop anchor at the bizarre island of Long Ring Long Land, they’re challenged to a Davy Back Fight by the fast-talking Foxy Pirates! The Straw Hats are no strangers to squabbles, but the sacred code of pirates decrees that this contest could cost Luffy his crew! Next on the horizon for the Hats, it’s a case of missing memories as everyone but Robin forgets they ever knew each other. Usopp is quick to claim the title of captain, and Zoro does the unthinkable by attacking Luffy! Can Robin recover the crew’s lost recollections before disaster strikes!? She’d better work fast because far greater foes lie ahead, and the Straw Hats will need all hands on deck if they hope to survive the return of Captain Foxy – and the icy arrival of Admiral Aokiji!
We are heading up north again this weekend for SakuraCon! Are you as excited as we are for the event? We have a ton of fun things planned, so read on for all of the details.
We have two English dub premieres scheduled this weekend.
Code:Breaker will screen on Friday, April 18th at 6:30 PM in Panels 1 (6C).
From the director of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood comes a story that asks just how many lives a hero can take before he becomes a villain.
Rei Ogami doesn’t have a problem with killing. As a Code:Breaker—a super-powered assassin employed by a secret government organization—he works outside of the law, existing in the gray area between right and wrong. When Rei gets an assignment, criminals are cremated in a blaze of blue fire. That is, until a classmate named Sakura witnesses his fatal flames in action and makes it her mission to keep him from killing again.
As Sakura becomes entrenched in Rei’s world of cruelty, mayhem, and violence, the line between good and evil begins to blur. When another Code:Breaker goes rogue and the remaining assassins assemble, murder might be the only way to make things right.
Haganai NEXT will screen on Saturday, April 19th at 6:00 PM in Panels 1(6C).

Re: Club Guidelines
It has come to our attention that your club—officially formed with the goal of “making friends”—has been taking part in questionable behaviors on campus. We’d like to remind you that none of the following are approved club activities:
- Stalking (especially taking candid photos of your peers)
- Playing inappropriate video games
- Watching anime involving adult themes
- The creation of time machines
While we applaud your creative efforts in making a movie about intergalactic samurai robot wars, please note that the costumes do not fit our dress code. In addition, we have reports of brewing drama between Yozora and Sena regarding Kodaka—including the fact that an engagement has taken place. Please fill out required paperwork if the chapel needs to be reserved.
The BD/DVD Combo of the series will release on May 13th. Click here to order your copy from our Shop!
SakuraCon is presenting a special screening of the Attack on Titan English dub on April 19th at 1:30 in Panels 1 (6C) with a Q&A to follow with the Japanese voice actors and staff!
To round out our panels for the weekend, make sure to not miss the FUNimation Industry Panel in Panels 2 (4C-2) on April 19th at 4:00 PM.

Written, directed and produced by Koreans and Korean Americans, LET ME OUT is written and directed by Jae Soh and Chang Rae Kim. Produced by Min Soh and Irene Cho. LET ME OUT is the first Korean independent film released back to back in both Korea and the U.S.
“It’s amazing for a small indie film to be recognized in the same company of other prominent media companies and industry leaders such as NBC’s THE VOICE, CNN’s Anthony Bourdain’s PARTS UNKNOWN and just in time for the film’s N. American DVD release on May 27th,” says Adam Zehner, VP of Licensing and Acquisitions, Group 1200 Media.
“Hyun Sang and I are so honored to accept this award on behalf of the team behind LET ME OUT in Korea. This was so unexpected, we are so thrilled to win this award. Thanks to our relationship with our U.S. distributor, Giant Ape, LET ME OUT, an indie Korean film can win the NYF Awards Gold Medal in the U.S. category at the NAB Show-the world’s largest electronic media show with nearly 90,000 attendees and thousands of exhibitors from all over the world. Anything is possible,” says Irene Cho, Producer, LET ME OUT.
“We are honored to be chosen for this award, and thankful they recognized this film as a Gold Medal winner amongst the other nominees in the industry,” says Scott Lonski, Director of Marketing Services, Group 1200.
LET ME OUT is a Korean language coming of age melodrama and pays homage to Day For Night (France), Living In Oblivion (USA) and Korean cinema. LET ME OUT pokes fun at director Yang Ik-June who won the 2009 Rotterdam Film Festival’s Tiger Award for his film, Breathless. Director of M, Duelist, Nowhere To Hide and Korean film icon, Lee Myungse is cast as himself.
This zombie melodrama is Mu-Young film school opus. An eternal senior, he knows everything about cinema but nothing about actual filmmaking. Critical of everyone else, he heckles the famous indie director Ik-June Yang at a campus screening and somehow receives film funding. His dream of working with his love-interest Ah-Young becomes a nightmare. Everything that can go wrong does. Barely surviving a disastrous shoot, Mu-Young learns making a movie is like love, you can’t do it alone. LET ME OUT is a tribute to guerrilla, indie, amateur, low-budget cineastes struggling to create. It is hope.
LET ME OUT opened in S. Korea on August 15, 2013 and was distributed through Baekdu Daegan Film Company in approximately 15 theaters including Art House Momo (Baekdu’s Art House theaters), CGV Movie Collage (the Art House division of CJ Entertainment), and Artplus Cinema Network in various cities throughout Korea, including Seoul. The film had its red carpet US Premiere at the Downtown Independent Theater in LA on August 16, 2013 to a sold out audience with director, Jae Soh and Kwon Hyun-Sang, the film’s lead actor. FUNimation and Giant Ape Media partnered with TUGG, to release the film theatrically in select cities including New York, NY, Dallas, TX, San Francisco, CA and Chicago, IL in Fall/Winter 2013. LET ME OUT is the first Korean independent film released back to back in both Korea and the U.S. and is distributed in the U.S. by Giant Ape, a Group 1200 Media company, based in Flower Mound, TX.
