Blood Blockade Battlefront centers around the crime fighting organization “Libra” and their battles in Hellsalem’s Lot, formerly known as New York City. Hellsalem’s Lot was created when a portal to the “Beyond” opened, becoming a paranormal melting pot of monsters, magic and the everyday mundane life, and it is up to Libra to clear the streets of trouble and prevent the horrors of this city from spreading to the outside world.

English Dub Premiere: Selector Spread Wixoss | Panel Room 1 | Saturday, May 7 | 12:00pm – 1:45am
WIXOSS is a popular trading card game in which players battle against each other with fighters known as LRIGs, using cards to support them. Certain LRIGs are able to communicate with their owners, and the girls chosen to wield them are known as “Selectors”. Selectors are given the chance to have any wish granted by winning battles against other Selectors, but should they lose three times, their wish will be reversed into a curse instead. The main series, selector infected WIXOSS, follows a girl named Ruko Kominato who becomes a Selector after receiving an LRIG that she names Tama. As she and various other Selectors battle it out for the sake of their wish, Ruko finds herself drawn into the dark sinister world of WIXOSS, discovering that win or lose, there is always a price to pay.

My Hero Academia Class

Wellness Week_Social_V3

Although the school semester is finishing, we’re starting our own My Hero Academia class. To kick things off, we’ll be learning how to become a hero starting with getting our own bodies into shape for International Health and Wellness Week!

This week, the employees of Funimation will be getting out of their chairs and doing fitness challenges, and we invite you to join us. Cheer on the Funimation family as they participate in pushup contests, hula-hoop competitions, the Hero Walk, and more! And we want to see you get involved too! We’ll be doing giveaways to people that show off their own skills over social media. The schedule for the week is as follows:

  • Monday (5/2) – Dragon Ball Throw – How far can you throw a Dragon Ball (stone throw competition)
  • Tuesday (5/3) – Push-up/Pull-up Competitions
  • Wednesday (5/4) – Hula-Hoop Contest
  • Thursday (5/5) – Lunge Competition and Jump Rope Fun (non-competition) – Lunge walk around the building the longest
  • Friday (5/6) – Hero Walk – 1 km walk during the day while cosplaying favorite superhero or wearing hero gear

After this week, we’ll post a new hero theme/challenge each month. The challenge is to embody that theme in a heroic sense using whatever method possible on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.). For example, the theme for May is “Fitness“.

Creatively figure out how to demonstrate that theme and complete this challenge through our social media channels and we’ll be giving away some My Hero Academia goodies to the fans that demonstrate it best. Use the hashtag “#OneForAll” to enter this challenge and join the My Hero Academia class!

Time To Celebrate – National Superhero Day!

Superheroes come in all shapes, sizes, and of course powers! Comics aren’t the only medium that has superheroes though; anime is chock-full of superheroes that represent the force of good against the villains that aim to harm innocent civilians! For National Superhero Day, we’ll be showing off some of our favorite anime superheroes!

“A fictional figure having superhuman powers or greatly enhanced abilities, usually portrayed as fighting evil or crime” is what TheFreeDictionary.com defines as a superhero, so we’re showing off anime characters that made it their mission to live up to this definition.

My Hero Academia

We’re starting things off with the list that inspired this list for us to do. My Hero Academia is the new hit of the season where near everyone has a mutant-like power (Quirks) and the world is filled with heroes and villains. The main character, Deku, was born without a Quirk, but he still aims to be a Superhero like his idol, the #1 Hero All Might!

My Hero Academia Deku Smash

One Punch Man

Unless you’ve lived under a rock, you must have heard about One Punch Man. Unfortunately it’s not a Funimation title, but it’d be wrong to not showcase a show about all about heroes on Superhero Day! In a world riddled by monsters and criminals, heroes are commissioned to take on all that ails the world whether they be small-bit criminals that can be handled by low-ranking C-Rank Heroes or world-ending threats that only the S-Ranks can handle. But the newest and strongest of heroes, Saitama, is woefully ignored… Oh well.

009 Re:Cyborg

Superhero anime probably wouldn’t be a thing if it wasn’t for the classic series of Cyborg 009. Regular people were transformed into superpowered cyborgs that were designed to do evil. However, they fought back and became heroes that defended the Earth against all types of threats. Now in 009 Re:Cyborg, the heroes are back to stop a mysterious terroristic threat.

Tiger and Bunny

One other non-Funimation title that has to be mentioned is Tiger and Bunny which is a buddy-cop series that features professional superheroes (more like sponsored superheroes)! The heroes put on a good image for the camera and act the part of a true hero, but they show a more human side outside of that. Even though superheroes are super, they are still human and mortal. It’s an enjoyable and funny ride!

Dragon Ball Z

To finish the list is the anime that inspired many of us to fly, shoot lasers, and fight evil aliens. Not Superman (sorry for the bad joke), but Goku and the Z fighters in Dragon Ball Z. They continue to inspire many people to train hard and stand up to what’s wrong even today (and to yell at the top of their lungs).

Who are your favorite superheroes? Tell us here! We hope you enjoyed the list!

My Hero Academia Cast Announcement

Never fear for we have A-Class voice actors and ADR staff who can bring My Hero Academia some voice acting justice! As announced on Dubbletalk, here are the voice actors for the new class of heroes in the upcoming Broadcast Dub of My Hero Academia. The first episode of the Broadcast Dub comes on 5/4/16!

Synopsis:

There’s a new hero in town! From Studio BONES, the creators of Fullmetal AlchemistCowboy Bebop and Space Dandy, comes My Hero Academia, a superhero origin story that soars to the top of the class.

Izuku has dreamt of being a hero all his life—a lofty goal for anyone, but especially challenging for a kid with no superpowers. That’s right, in a world where 80% of the population has some kind of superpowered “quirk,” Izuku was unlucky enough to be born completely normal. But that’s not going to stop him from enrolling in one of the world’s most prestigious hero academies. Now, the only thing standing between him and his first class is the academy’s formidable entrance exam—nothing a little private tutoring from the world’s mightiest hero can’t solve.

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR PROJECT ITOH’S “HARMONY”

Second in Series of Film Adaptations to Screen in U.S. on May 17 & 18

harmony_key_01.jpg

FLOWER MOUND, TEXAS – April 21, 2016. On the heels of yesterday’s limited theatrical engagement of “The Empire of Corpses,” Funimation® Films announced today that advance tickets are now available for the movie “Harmony,” the second in the series of three animated films adapted from Project Itoh’s novels. The film, produced by award-winning Studio 4°C, is co-directed by the duo of Michael Arias and Takashi Nakamura. Presented in both Japanese with English subtitles and English dub versions, “Harmony” will screen in more than 60 theaters across the United States on May 17 and 18, 2016. Local theater listings will provide specific dates and times for subtitled and dubbed screenings. Tickets are available for purchase at funimationfilms.com/harmony.

“If response to the first film is any indication, fans will truly enjoy ‘Harmony,’” said Gen Fukunaga, founder and CEO of Funimation. “Project Itoh’s ‘Harmony’ will transport moviegoers on an epic science fiction voyage – to a world, once ravaged by war and disease, that has been transformed to ‘perfection’ by nanotechnology.”

To coincide with today’s ticket sales announcement, Funimation Films also released the full-length theatrical trailer for “Harmony.’” The trailer is available for viewing through an exclusive partnership with IGN.com, the top gaming and entertainment website. Click the image below to watch!

Screen Shot 2016-04-21 at 1.37.52 PM

“Fans will not want to miss the futuristic world that Studio 4°C has brought to life in ‘Harmony,’” said Mike DuBoise, EVP and COO of Funimation. “Whether anime or sci-fi fan, there are options for both subtitled and dubbed versions of the film, and we encourage everyone to purchase advance tickets to this limited, two-day release.”

“Harmony” was the second novel by Japanese science fiction writer Project Itoh, pseudonym of Satoshi Ito, who died at the early age of 34 from cancer. Published in 2009, the novel was very well received by readers and was awarded the coveted Japanese Science Fiction Grand Prize, which recognizes the best in science fiction works spanning novels, movies, animation and manga. The novel was also nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award for distinguished science fiction in 2010.

“Harmony” producer Studio 4°C has been producing films, OVAs and shorts for more than 30 years. The animation studio is most well-known for its 2006 release “Tekkon Kinkreet,” which received numerous awards around the globe including the Japanese Academy Prize for Animation of the Year and Best Animated Film at Fantasia, both in 2007. Harmony co-directors Michael Arias and Takashi Nakamura are well known in their own rights as well. U.S.-born Arias rose to prominence as the first non-Japanese director of a major anime film with “Tekkon Kinkreet.” Nakamura has animated or directed more than a dozen films during his career, including the cult classic “Akira” – one of the most well know anime films of all time.

Film Synopsis

In a future ruled by an unwavering dedication to good health, three high school girls led by the defiant Miach Mihie attempt suicide as the ultimate act of rebellion. Tuan Kirie survives, but can’t shake the hatred she has for the “perfect world” she lives in.

Years later, a simultaneous mass suicide rocks the globe and sends society into a state of shock. A small group stands up to take credit for the event, claiming they’ve hijacked the consciousness of every person on the planet. Everything about the terrorists’ message sounds too familiar to Tuan. She suspects her old friend Miach might be involved, but how could that be when she’d supposedly killed herself years earlier? Desperate for answers, Tuan launches an investigation that takes her across the globe chasing the ghost of her old friend. But what is Miach’s end game? Will she finally wake the world from its monotonous slumber? Or, end it all for good?

Project Itoh: Explaining ‘The Empire of Corpses’, ‘Harmony’, and ‘Genocidal Organ’

The Empire of Corpses‘, ‘Harmony‘, and ‘Genocidal Organ’ are a trio of works by the late Japanese science fiction writer Satoshi Itōunder the pseudonym ’Project Itoh’.   The novels have been (or are in the process of being) adapted into films. While Funimation announced the licenses to all three films and we often refer to them together, they are stand-alone works rather than a true trilogy! It can get a bit complicated, so we wanted to provide a little background for anyone new to world of Project Itoh!

  • Satoshi Itō (Project Itoh) (Oct. 14, 1974 – March 20, 2009)

During his career as a web designer, he wrote a novel called Genocidal Organ and was nominated to Nihon SF Taisho Award in 2007.   However, Itoh had been diagnosed, and dealing, with recurrent cancer since 2001 and hospitalized frequently for treatment. Itoh continued to write novels during his last several years, including Harmony and The Empire of Corpses, and passed away on March 20, 2009. Later on in 2012, Toh Enjoe, a fellow award-winning science fiction writer who had often appeared with Itoh at conventions and in interviews, announced at a press conference that he would complete Itoh’s unfinished novel The Empire of Corpses.  Later, Noitamina adapted Project Itoh’s three novels into animated feature films. All three films were directed and produced by different directors and studios.

This film was released in Japan back in October 2015 and was the first film adaptation of Project Itoh’s works, animated and produced by WIT Studio (Attack on Titan and Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign).  It is based on the award-winning novel by Project Itoh and completed by Toh Enjoe. The novel also won the Best Japanese Long Story category at 44th Seiun (Nebula) Awards in 2013 and the Special Award at Nihon SF Taisho Awards in 2012.

This film was released in Japan in November 2015 and was the second film adaptation of Project Itoh’s novels, animated and produced by Studio 4°C (Berserk: The Golden Arc series and Thundercats [TV 2011]). The film is based on by Project Itoh’s Philip K. Dick award-winning novel. The novel also won the Best Japanese Long Story category at 40th Seiun (Nebula) Awards in 2009 and the Nihon SF Taisho Award  in 2009.

  • Genocidal Organ

The film has yet to release in Japan. The studio originally slated to produce it, Manglobe (Gangsta), filed for bankruptcy in September 2015. Genocidal Organ has been delayed to release in 2017 under a new studio called Geno Studio, with many key former staffers from Manglobe still involved.
