Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era hang out with FUNimation

IMG_0255What happens when you take Dragon Ball Z, a group of hip hop artists from Brooklyn, NY, and mix them together? You get critically acclaimed rapper, Joey Bada$$ and the hip hop-based collective, Pro Era… who all happen to be huge anime fans.

“Got Dragon Balls like my name was Vegeta” is one of the lines from Joey’s new song, “Christ Conscious” (available now on iTunes) so it only made sense that Joey and Pro Era members CJ Fly, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution and Dyemond Lewis paid a visit to the FUNimation office recently, while in Dallas, TX for Joey’s B4.DA.$$ tour.

IMG_0253But after hanging out with the Pro Era crew for most of the afternoon, we quickly discovered that they don’t just like Dragon Ball Z, it source of inspiration for many of them and a direct point of connection with fans — something we definitely understand respect all too well.

Check out the video below for our interview with Joey Bada$$ and tour of FUNimation with some of the coolest guys in hip hop.

There’s just one more US stop on the Pro Era Tour before the guys head out across the globe. Click here to check out the tour schedule for a show near you.  And keep an eye out for Joey Bada$$’s debut studio album, B4.DA.$$, dropping later this year.

Give a Warm Welcome to Lauren!

lauren moorePlease join us in welcoming our brand new team member, Lauren Moore! As you guys may know, our little social team has been just Rojas and myself for a few years now, and we’ve desperately needed the additional support. So, we are absolutely thrilled to have Lauren join our team as our new Social Media Coordinator!

Lauren first moved to Texas from her home in the Cayman Islands to snag a journalism degree and pursue a career in the broadcast industry. Lauren held a number of roles at the gaming entertainment website ScrewAttack.com, before working her way across DFW and North America as a producer. Now, Lauren has joined the ranks of fellow anime lovers at FUNimation and we could not be more excited to have her! Aside from anime, her other loves include theatre, cats, kickball and giant plates of food.

This is also not the first time that FUNimation fans may have seen our lovely Lauren! Check out the FUNimation Show Quickie below where we attended the Xbox Area One tour party in Dallas!

The Most Epic ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

You’ve no doubt seen these ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos, and now our time has come. Recently, Voice Actor Todd Haberkorn challenged FUNimation, giving us a great opportunity to raise awareness for ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”, is a serious disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Make your donations and help treat and cure ALS today on www.ALSA.org.

FUNimation has already made a donation, but we went ahead and created an ice bucket video anyway – in the most epic way possible. As the challenge goes, we’re nominating our pals at VIZ MEDIA, Aniplex USA, Sentai Filmworks, and Crunchyroll.

Take a look at the video below:

Food, Fans, and Fun in San Francisco

Last year, our friends at Japan Video invited us to attend the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival® to get some amazing footage for The FUNimation Show. This year’s event will be held on Saturday and Sunday April 12-13 and April 19-20, 2014. It’s free to join in on the festivities celebrating Japanese and Japanese American culture in San Francisco’s Japantown!

San Francisco’s Japantown is also the oldest and largest of its kind in the United States, so you know you’ll have an authentic experience. Never been to a cherry blossom festival before? Check out our latest FUNimation Show Quickie to see what it’s all about.

Man at Arms Makes Tsubaki!

Complete Series
on Blu-ray

Our friends over at The Sword and the Stone just launched another episode of Man at Arms on their AWE me YouTube channel. The Burbank-based blacksmith shop famous for weapons featured in movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, and Blade created Edward Elric’s dragon spear in a previous episode. This time they’ve delved into the world of Soul Eater by making Tsubaki! Sorry guys, they couldn’t make her human form without breaking some cloning laws so you’ll have to settle with her chain scythe form. You can catch the full episode on their channel, but, thanks to Assistant Blacksmith Bryan Forrest, we got some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage just for our FUNimation viewers.  ;)

Be sure to watch until the end for an epic battle cry from Master Blacksmith Tony Swatton.
