Happy International Translation Day!

Babel Fish says, Happy International Translation Day! Well, it’s technically tomorrow. What is International Translation Day, you may ask? Well, it’s celebrated on the 30th of September every year on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. This day is promoted by the International Federation of Translators. It’s to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community and promote the translation profession in different countries.

We anime fans, especially those of us who don’t speak Japanese fluently, know how vital our translators are. Without our translators, we would have to struggle along with raws and try to figure out what the heck was going on.

So, we here at FUNimation would like to take this time to give a big THANK YOU to our translators:

  • Steve Simmons. Translator since 1999. Doesn’t sweat petty things; doesn’t pet sweaty things.
  • Sarah Alys Lindholm. Translator since 2003; Quality Assurance Translator for FUNimation since 2008. Anosmic who is often heard to ask, “Hey, can you sniff this for me?”
  • Javier Lopez. Translator since 2001. Puro Tejano. Sort of.
  • Jack Wiedrick. Translator since 2002. Brews his own beer. Loves math, languages, chess; hates slow cars in the fast lane.
  • Clyde Mandelin. Translator since 2002. Favorite thing: Rockin. Favorite food: Steak. Archnemesis: The birds in Ninja Gaiden.
  • Shoko Oono. Gamer, translator, and hamster-keeper.

These are the individuals responsible for translating your favorite FUNimation titles. So, make sure you leave a comment on the blog to thank them for all their hard work.

Happy Anniversary to Dragon Ball Z

UPDATE: Full interview now available HERE!

On September 13, 1996 a little show you may have heard of called Dragon Ball Z first aired on North American television. Three years later, coincidentally also on September 13, in 1999 the FUNimation dub of the series debuted on Cartoon Network.

Like many of you, I remember watching Dragon Ball Z when it was being featured on the Toonami block hosted by the little robot dude TOM. To honor this DBZ broadcast anniversary, we’ve interviewed the man who not only voiced TOM but also our very own Krillin from DBZ. We be talked to Sonny Strait about the series then and now and as it became the pop-culture phenomenon that we know today.

Here’s a quick teaser from the interview with Sonny Strait.

Check back here later this week as we post the full interview!

As we are feeling nostalgic, from now throughout the course of the release of the upcomingDragon Ball Z on Blu-ray (Level 1.1 is coming on November 8, 2011) we will be bringing you a look at the series throughout the years: interviews with staff who have been with the series since the start, interviews with actors, behind-the-scenes tales, and a peeks into the FUNimation archives including the very first script, photos and more.

Look for all this and more as we celebrate the most popular anime series of all time – Dragon Ball Z.

Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos Film Festival Dates

At the heart of the conflict is Julia, a young alchemist befriended by Alphonse. Anime News Network Talks DBZ Blu-ray with FUNimation

Our very own Director of DVD, Blu-ray & Video Production Clarine Harp and Blu-ray, DVD & Video Production Manager Matt O’Hara were interview on Anime News Network’s latest podcast. Hear them talk shop and go into detail on the soon to be available Dragon Ball Z Blu-ray.

We provided ANN with some comparison shots of the various DBZ releases that I’ve included below. A few things you might notice about the video is that HD restoration of the film has color most true to the original work, while keeping the most amount of detail. Also, the Blu-ray version will contain more visual footage due to maintaining the original 4:3 aspect ratio in contrast to the Orange Season Sets. Since the HD restore is also handled frame-by-frame, many scratches or anomalies were removed that may be visible in previous releases.

For more on the film restoration and Blu-ray process, listen to the interview.

Coming Soon to Blu-ray and DVD!

We’ve had tons of great releases recently like PeacemakerSpice and Wolf - Season 2, and Eden of the East: Paradise Lost, but it doesn’t stop there! The constant stream of anime and Asian live action titles continue to flow out of FUNimation’s doors and into retail stores – and hopefully into your hands.

Check out the release schedule for titles coming soon to Blu-ray and DVD. Don’t forget that if you pre-order from retailers likeRightStuf.com, you might even be able to get your copy early. What titles are you most excited for? What have you already pre-ordered?
