Ciel is, in my point of view, a fallen hero. he has a tragic past, and a tragic future, so what more could he do than delete the part of him that would make him prey? throwing away his bieng for a new harder to reach, manipulative, and suspicouse person, making his soul tainted, to become a villian, but his innocence keeping his sanity making him to not let go of his heroic personalityin total.
wow, people do have interesting assessments of Ciel's personality. the "good or evil" question is really tricky. How do you define "evil"? The ending of the series makes that an even harder question - are we talking about just 13 y/o human Ciel or

Demon Ciel? Most of the 2nd season he seemed to be like his old self even after the soul-sucking memory loss, though he did get confused toward the end after Claude kidnapped, torchured and forced Alois's soul into him. I was a little confused at the end too - it wasn't really Ciel's idea to let Hannah have his soul in exchange for immortality, was it? That seemed to be between Hannah and Alois, and Ciel just went along with it. If that was his last act as a human , it was very cruel to Sebastian
but plain human Ciel, for most of that 3 1/2 years after his parents' death, was he good or evil? the debate can still go on
