It basically revolves around playing the game of Go, so those not familiar with it will depend on the characters to enjoy it--and I think they're very appealing.As for One Piece--you should start off by watching the first 13 or so episodes (which are handily available via streaming ). If you don't enjoy the show by around that point (not unimaginable, as not everyone enjoys the art style), it's probably not for you. I personally consider it one of the best Shonen titles ever (and it has some filler arcs and padding, but I don't think it's yet reached DBZ's level, or even Naruto and Bleach's).

It is followed by a sequel, the 24 episode Higurashi Kai, and a 5 episode ova, Higurashi Rei. Umineko no Naku Koro ni is the other show in the When They Cry series. This one is a murder mystery show that takes place in a mansion. Again, the Groundhog Day motif continues, this time with different characters and a different plot. Umineko is 26 episodes long. Both shows are phenomenal.

if you want sad theres nothing sadder than Grave of the Fireflies.Im sure youve probably seen Chrono Crusade and Kanon. Those are pretty sad also. Basalisk is also another one you could check out.

Elfen Lied is violent and has tons of gore but it has some parts that make you want to cry, it's also a short series i think only 13 episodes and an ova (correct me if i'm wrong). Grave of the fireflies has been mentioned, Barefoot Gen is along the same lines.
