You're not the first person I've seen saying they need a more powerful system to play Crunchyroll, but it uses Flash, so as long as you're not trying to watch 1080P on a under-powered netbook or a 5+ year old laptop, that shouldn't be an issue; slow Internet speeds are more problematic.

Even watching all of Nichijou, that should only use up about a fourth of the guest pass, so I hope you're able to find something else to enjoy while you give it a try.

Hey EyeOfPain,

You're right - the problems I had with playback were caused mostly by an older version of the Flash Player. I updated the player plugins for both Chrome and Firefox, and now the playback is smooth.

I also found that for my particular system, and for the sake of just plain ease of viewing, it "looked better" if I set the monitor resolution to 1280 X 720. That gave me a good match for watching the episodes full-screen at 720p.

I've seen the first two episodes but will now re-watch them as I was spending part of the time getting things to work and couldn't give it my full attention.

But already I like it a lot. The windup key prop reminded me of the kinds of offbeat comedy devices used in Pani Poni Dash. I got a kick out of the collision with the kid rendered as an atomic blast, complete with expanding shock wave and labeled debris that fell in a neat sequence onto Yukko's head.

The slapstick comedy and music also remind me of the old Warner Brothers cartoons. In fact, I think the music here is great.

So thanks once again for the pass! I have to do some capturing of Anime VOD Network epsiodes before they expire at 12:00 AM but will return to Nichijou when that's done.

Say... do you get some kind of signup bonus if I get a Crunchyroll premium subscription? I just want to make sure that happens if I sign up....

Not that I recall, but it's been a while since I started my Premium membership. I would think something like that would be in the initial account creation, but I don't really know.

If you like the music already, you'll probably get a kick out of episode 17; the house of cards bit is great.

You get access to HD streams, no ads on videos/around videos, ability to watch videos the day they come out, discounts from their store, and a star next to your username. You also get a free guest pass each month so you can give them to other people.

It should be a similar experience to what you're getting via the Guest Pass right now.

EDIT: EOP beat me to it. But yeah, there's nothing more than what you're getting the pass.

Re: Recommend me an anime thread

Could someone recommend a newbie an anime ;D
I haven't watched much anime, but I just watched two great series:
Rosario + Vampire
and
Kaze no Stigma

Something I like about these is the romantic-comedic approach to it. It creates some emotion but doesn't get all soft (hence the "comedic" part).
I also watched Fullmetal Alchemist a long time ago and I loved it, but I couldn't watch FMAB for more than two episodes, I just outright disliked it.

So basically, action, fighting, romance, comedy.
I'd be greatly thankful if someone would help me out; as a new member of the community I must say it's odd not having watched too much anime when everyone else has.

@souljabri

Welcome to the forums!

I would suggest skipping forward to episode 13-14 in Brotherhood (where it really begins to split from the original anime into manga material). Those initial episodes are not the greatest, though there are some differences that do impact some things later on, but it's nothing that you shouldn't be able to get from quick summaries. If you still don't like it by episode 19 after skipping ahead, then yeah, it's not for you.

Soul Eater is a good action/comedy show. Not really any romance, though. Give it at least 4-5 eps before deciding on it, the first 3 serve only as character intros and a brief intro to their world and what they do.

Legend of the Legendary Heroes has comedy, action, and some romance.

Steins;Gate focuses on comedy, drama, romance later on, but no real action. It's a thriller about sending text messages to the past using a microwave time machine, which sounds ridiculous, but it's a pretty good show.

Blue Exorcist has comedy and action.

Durarara is good for some action, comedy, and drama. It's got a lot of dialogue though and that seemed to turn some people off who thought it was going to be more action-focused.

Baccano is another good action show. It's got lots of comedy and even some romance. It's very violent though.

Pandora Hearts has action (though the animation isn't the best), comedy, and some light romance. The ending's really incomplete though (it's a mystery and the manga's ongoing so they ran out of stuff to adapt and wound up creating their own ending that didn't really resolve anything).

Inu X Boku SS is a romantic comedy with some sprinklings of action.

Fairy Tail has action, comedy, and some romance.

Sword Art Online has action, comedy, and romance.

All of these are available either here on FUNi's website, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, or Crunchyroll. If you want to watch something on Crunchyroll, message me and I'll give you a guest pass so you can watch without ads in higher quality.

Thank you, Firefly. I will check these out. I am especially interested in Soul Eater because, if I am not mistaken, it is made by Gonzo? They're the makers behind R+V and Kaze no Stigma. Thanks again smile

Soul Eater's a BONES anime (FMA, FMAB, Ouran High, Star Driver, etc). But yeah, it's a pretty good show. Lots of fun.

No! Soul Eater was made by Studio Bones who are known for animating Fullmetal Alchemist (both series).

Since you liked Kaze no Stigma, I suggest checking out Full Metal Panic. It has a similar vibe to it. Season 1 was made by Gonzo, while the other two seasons were made by Kyoto Animation. Kyoto Animation did a good job in capturing Gonzo's flare, so all three seasons feel consistent in art design.

Since you liked Rosario + Vampire, check out Cat Planet Cuties and Sekirei. They are both harem titles with a fair share of romance, comedy and action.

My friend just told me about this and I think I will go watch it.
He also recommended a show called Girls Bravo... but I'm not liking it as much as I'd hoped. It's hilarious, though!

Hey EyeOfPain,

Crunchyroll just sent me an email saying that my all-access account had expired. Apparently the guest pass was good for 48hrs after it was activated, not until April 1.

But that's cool, I saw enough to convince me about getting a subscription. At least now I know that I have the equipment and software to watch their streams reliably (along the way I also figured out how to capture their 1280 X 720p streams to a second PC, so I'll be cutting DVDs and BluRays once I get started).

I'll probably go for the Anime-only plan for $6.95/month. I have to go shuffle some budget items first. I'm way over-subscribed on DirecTV anyway and this will give me the nudge to do something about it.

Once again I thank you for the pointer about the flash player, and for the guest pass!
