Question about the Hunter x Hunter Remake

Recently I just finished getting up-to-date with the manga (LOVE IT!)

Like many Hunter x Hunter fans I also would like to see the new anime get licensed eventually (preferably by Funimation). tongue

I haven't watched any of the episodes yet but I have read some comments.

It seems that several scenes so far have been censored and toned down the violence.

The manga of Hunter x Hunter has several moments with heavy violence and are actually pretty gory.

Obviously TV broadcast rules have changed over the years and with this show being shown to primarily children (in Japan) I suppose it's somewhat expected that the violence would be reduced.

e.g. Dragon Ball Kai uncut wasn't as violent as Dragon Ball Z uncut

My question is, has there been any confirmation that the DVDs/Blu-ray will be uncut?

If yes, fantastic! And source please!

If no, that's a shame. While the heavy violence isn't what makes this series great it certainly makes it stand out compared to other shonen shows and it would be a bit disappointing to only see a watered-down version.

According to amazon Japan the first volume will be released on February 5.

If there hasn't been any news of uncut/restored scenes I guess fans will know of any changes to the episodes around that time (only a few days away).

I'm hoping for Viz, myself. I can just hear Brianne Siddall as Gon, Steve Blum as Leorio, and Mona Marshall as Kurapika.

I haven't seen the original anime, but I'm really enjoying Madhouse's adaptation. If it is toned down, it still feels noticeably more intense then most Shonen. I mean, even with stricter broadcast standards, I'm pretty sure Hisoka decapitated someone (it was a shadow shot, but still).

And as a fan of the DC Animated Universe, I can assure you that censorship does not have to be a problem in the hands of the capable. If used properly, it can even be beneficial.

That's a bad idea seeing as they were responsible for the Hunter x Hunter 1999 dub being complete garbage (and i like Blue Water so it upsets me how badly they ruined this one after watching it all the way through).

Seeing as how the original flopped for Viz, I would rather see someone else license the new anime and give it a sub-only release since it doesn't really need a dub unless there's proof that there's a fanbase for the anime here and no, the manga does not count this time and neither are people who watch it on Crunchyroll because they don't always equal good sales. Heck, look at Eyeshield 21, Gintama & Glass Mask 2005 (3 long-running shows that were & still are streaming on Crunchyroll & 1 of them had previous exposure through Toonami Jetstream) and figure out why Sentai refuses to get any more episodes of them.

I'd like to say that while the new HxH series has toned down the violence from the manga, it's actually less censored overall than 1999 version that every hardcore HxH fan regards so highly. There's a poster from the Naruto Forums named "Mr. Toto" who's been posting comparisons to the first series as new episodes of the new series come out. In almost every instance, the new version gets away with more graphic content than what the 1st series did.

Good to know.

Even if the DVD/Blu-ray isn't restored with scenes as graphic as the manga (at this point it seems like there won't be any changes), at least it's an improvement over the 1999 series. smile

HxH shouldn't be the only series singled out for toning down the violence.

I know Bleach has done this also

e.g. In the manga for one fight Rangiku had her right rib cage slashed away/removed, but the anime left her side intact and made it internal damage instead

Doesn't really take away the enjoyment of watching the anime and it gives a reason to read the manga.

Having read the first 5 volumes of the manga before seeing the show I found the actors quite fitting the characters. From what I recall the dialog stayed mostly true to the manga as well, besides the Leorio/Reolio joke. That a needed change though since dubs always get rid of the 'san' from names. I was very impressed with Gon's voice actor. Gon actually sounded childlike. I'm sick of shonen shows giving the main characters generic raspy voices (Naruto, Monkey D, Luffy, Kid Goku, Ash Ketchum, ect). At first I was a bit confused by Kurapika's feminine sounding voice, but when it became apparent the show was aiming to make his gender ambiguous it all made sense. Plus I've been watching the new HxH show subbed and he sounds like a woman in the Japanese dub too so there's that. Anyways, I really enjoyed the dub. I felt the main cast gave a great performance.
