Re: Lack of female orientated anime in the US

Both Sailor moon animes...would be way too big of a project for Funimation to handle. And I rather them pick up the remake when...you know when it's finished, not when they haven't even started to make it. They should start small, like 11-13 episode stuff.

You know hoe pissed people would be if they started dubbed Sailor Moon and stopped because the sells were poor. Aniplex did that magical girl show and it's seller well for them, maybe that's a new start in the anime market over here.

Re: Lack of female orientated anime in the US

*** sits Soundmonkey in the corner for a time out before he sprains something ***

There are plenty of shows that cater to female viewers, but alas, they are not as plentiful as their manga counterparts. Anime shows based on Shojo manga (manga intended for female reader under 16) are out there, but it takes some research and digging to find them.

Shows like Vampire Knight, Kobato and many others are just a small offering of anime that started its life out as a series targeted for women. As for BL anime, there are plenty of those too... and since Yuri romance is one of my favorite styles of storytelling, I won't wag my finger at anyone looking for BL or anything of a particular interest, if that is what floats anyone's boat here.

I think a good place to start looking for anime that is centered around, or featuring, or intended for female audiences is something that one will have to hit the nets for; places like ANN or My Anime List are good places to do the paper turning, and find some shows that are custom tailored to what particular interests each viewer wants.

A few more off the top of my head that come to mind are The Story of Saiunkoku, Ultra Maniac, S.A., Boys Over Flowers

Hope that helps.

I'd say it has to do mostly with economics as it is insensible for a company to license something when some other license is seen from past results would provide larger revenues. I don't know if they have all been scheduled for physical release but sentai has quite a few:
Amagami SS, Chance Pop Session, Glass Mask, Hiro no Kakera, Inu x Boku (maybe), Kimikiss, La cordo de oror, Arcana famiglia, Natsuyuki (it's romance at least right?) and some others.

@David: Wait...how did you just...WHY AM I IN THIS CORNER!? yell But yeah ahh.... what David said. tongue

Also @Vata: Sailor Moon would not be any bigger a project for them then YuYuHakusho & DBZ were in the past or Fairy Tail & One Piece are now, the demand is there, it would sell weather they get the old series or the new one, or both. The manga constantly being #1 on the charts of U.S. sales is proof enough of that. The Sailor Moon fanbase is hungry for as many hotcakes as companies can give them.

No, the said "demand" is there. How many of those people that are spending $10-12 a volume for the manga is going to spend $40-60 for 13 episode season parts? if you work on the 200 episodes the original has, that'll be 14 or 15 for them just to put it out...most ARE NOT willing to commit to such a long running project. And I bet most of these people that are buying the manga sure won't have the money to pay up that sort of cash.

There is a BIG difference with a $12 manga to a $40 anime boxset.

I know I've told you this before, but Madoka Magica is Seinen. And it sells because its one of the strongest pieces of animated fiction made in the last decade.

Edit: For the sake of staying on topic, if you haven't seen Chihayafuru, Paradise Kiss, Nodame Cantabile, or Hana Yori Dango, you should watch those.

@Renzokuken: It's still a magical girl series (and a really dark take on that genre), which that ends up making it appeal more to boys than to girls.

Wow aren't we miss Pessimistic, see the thing is SAILOR MOON HAS HAD AN ESTABLISHED FANBASE SINCE THE 90's. Many of those fans that were kids/tweens/teens back then are now adults with dispensable income, and despite weather you want to believe it or not, older fans (in most cases) are more loyal consumers, especially when its something they really like. Sailor Moon is just as big as DBZ for some people, price is not that much of an issue, I can attest that I know at least a dozen people at my college that would be willing to dish out for uncut Sailor Moon weather it cost $40 or $400 .

People seem to be too negative in their views of the possibility of sales of any older show thats not DBZ, sure Sailor Moon would not sale as well as DBZ, but I can personally bet my favorite hat that it would at least sell as well as Fairy Tail &/or One Piece.

But this is getting off topic (sort of)

Point being, yes it would sell, but feel free to think whatever you want about the matter.

Back on topic, as David said go to ANN see if you can find anything that tickles your fancy, and if not, oh well, just be patient, i'm sure more shows suited to your tastes will pop up eventually.

I think that's a matter of option...I personally hate the damned thing. I couldn't watch past episode one. And $130 for 12 episodes is a ripoff and I refuse to support that. At least I got 26 episodes at that price for Durarara. At that price, they could've at least did better acting for the thing. Either way, IT STILL IS a magical girl anime, that doesn't change.

Check out Sekirei. That's a series that was distributed overseas (by Funimation no less) which is based off the work of a yaoi mangaka.

When you're done looking it up, care telling me why you don't see as many Japanese males immigrate to different countries as opposed to Japanese females?
