If I can only pick one that you should watch asap I'd pick Great Teacher Onizuka.
I'm actually watching it for the first time and I'm liking every minute of it.
I'd love to actually own it on DVD but it's OOP and I'm not fond of those high prices for the remaining stock.

yes and if i may so say i highley recomend bracing yourself if u decide to ever watch master of martial hearts just finished if u wanna know why im so upset ask haha i kinda wanna share my feelings about it without upseting anyone over it. i used to go to the local librairy and sit down n read some G.T.O
I'll thin the crap out of the list for you
... and this is all you're left with. Everything there is some form of classic or is at least halfway decent. Everything else is mediocre at best and not worth watching.
I'll break it down further:
Outlaw Star - Excellent classic space adventure. One of maybe five of its kind.
Excel Saga - The pinnacle of 90's anime random humor
Tenchi Muyo - The only harem series that matters
Great Teacher Onizuka - Fantastic
Paranoia Agent - Amazing social and psychological commentary
FLCL - By far and away, the greatest anime ever made. Nothing touches FLCL. Watch this 10 times.
Azumanga Daioh - The only 4koma comedy series that matters
Durarara - Good, but watch Baccano! first
NEEDLESS - silly and entertaining shounen with lots of explosions and guitar solos
thank you so much! i remeber FLCL back in the toonami days so thts why its on there im actualy watching it now after finishing the disapointing ending of master if martial hearts FML. i agree the oldies tht were once aired on toonami are by far the best!

My personal recommendations: RomeoXJuliet, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Rainbow Nisha ( I forgot the rest of the title, but its streaming on here), Sekaiichi Hatsukoi and Junjo Romantica (if your into BL), Shigofumi: Letters From the Departed, and thats all I can really think about.

Durarara!!
FLCL and Paranoia Agent are shorter, so I'd say watch those first and then depending on your mood, Chobits if you want light-hearted romance, Vampire Knight if you want to go a little darker, Outlaw Star if you want a fun space adventure and Durarara!! if you want a fun Tokyo adventure with a little mystery. And I don't think you necessarily have to watch Baccanp before Durarara!!, though there are some shout-outs in it. I'd almost recommend watching Durarara!! before Baccano, especially if you're not a big fan of gore.

Great Teacher Onizuka - Don't watch this one dubbed unless your're a huge fan of Steve Blum's work.
To Love Ru - If you ever want to watch anything ToLoveRu related skip the first season. Just watch the OVAs (except OVA 3) and Motto ToLoveRu.

FLCL
Durarara and FLCL are worth watching through a second or third time.
