Who is your favorite anime character of all time? Why do you like them? Not only that, but what roles do they play that make them so spectacular?
My personal favorite: Hei, from Darker Than Black. I can't explain why I like him so much, but to me, he's the perfect character. Even though most people may not share the same opinion, especially after Season 2, I still find him to be interesting. Every man has a breaking point, and his was relatively high, and he was able to bounce back in the end. Not only is he skilled enough to take on elite assassins without possessing a superpower, but when he has the power he has he makes the most rational and selfless choices of the ones he's given, even the times he's not given the choice. To me, he possess excellent traits without being unbelievable, and that makes him my favorite character.

There MUST be a currently existing topic for this...
But even so, I'd have to say my favorite so far is Medusa Gorgon from Soul Eater. She's the genius master mind behind her evil plans, controlling people like pawns, but still holds herself as the most powerful piece. Even when she was finally beaten, it was by something she couldn't possibly have known was coming. I've never seen such an all around unwavering villain in any anime thus far.

with the moments that keep us together." - a Koa commercial
I searched for a thread like this, but nothing turned up. I saw a favorite Anime/Characters thread right after I made it, but this is about why you like them, not who they are per say.
That kinda goes along with that thread. Although we more or less just list our favorites, that's also the place to share your reasons why. It's just kinda time consuming to do so, hence why we just keep it a list. Speaking of which, I'll have to update my own list very soon after seeing some new shows; perhaps next time I'll give quick reasons why I like them when I do.
@Bug: Yeah, your all good, lots of topics of discussion can be simmilar, its only when their exactly the same or duplicates we mean old mods have to lock em up.
But back on topic, my favorite anime character atm would probably be...
ERZA SCARLET- Fairy Tail
Erza is one of my favorite characters because she is something you don't see very often in anime, A Strong, well written female. Erza is the whole package, Beauty, Brains, & Brawn. And while she can be a bit harsh towards her fellow Fairy Tail Members at times, its only because she cares. I like her because she has both a tough side & a sensitive side, she's not perfect and she knows it, heck she even admits to herself at one poin in the series the reason she wears all of her armors is essentially because their her equivalent to a security blanket. But she always gives it her all, especially in a fight. And thats why she's one of my fav characacters atm. Also, red-heads are just awesome in general XD.
I also enjoy how Mashima treats his female characters well overall, despite all being very sexy, and all easily could just be more generic otaku-bait, he actually treats them pretty much the same as the male characters. And even the more fanservicey moments of the series are well balanced out with other things.
Isn't It Great To Different, Isn't It Great To Be Who You Are!? Once You Learn To Accept Yourself, You'll Become A Shining Star.
I can't pick just one so I will go by categories.
For playful innocent child-like characters: I vote for cute little Lime from Saber Marionette J, J Again and J to X. She is the most believably innocent character I have ever seen, she likes to give hugs, says cute alternate ways to look at things, has Megumi Hayashibara doing her voice, draws, easy to please and amuse, a smile on her face when up to mischief, acts like a real child when sad and always means well.
Superhero: I got to say Tekkaman Blade because he has been through hell, yet doesn't give up and is not a cold jerk nor a campy cartoon hero, he reminds me of Kenshin in a way. Blade has had deep personal problems I can relate to.
Pretty girl: Canal Volfield from Lost Universe, she is caring, comically whiny, consoling and a heartwarming appearance that just makes my heart melt.
Once upon a time, Lime from Saber Marionette was so cute with her hugs, a real person decided to give lots of hugs. THE END Megumi Hayashibara may be in her 40s, but she still looks adorable. Zzzzz....... Deficiency of cuteness detected, initiating Kawaii Cannon! There was a hug monster who gave lots of hugs and we all lived happily ever after. THE END
Hmm... It's hard to pick one favorite but...
Saber - Fate Series: Saber is a gallant Knight, capable leader and a just and noble soul worthy of the legend she bears, but she is also a tragic heroine. A young girl who chose to bear the fate of a nation on her shoulders and walk the lonely path of a King. Never a moment to laugh, to love, or to live for herself, she sacrificed her entire life for her kingdom and in the end was rewarded only with scorn, betrayal and eventual death. Saber laments her role as a cold, rational ruler who never understood the hearts of her people. It is this distance that eventually leads to an uprising against her that nearly destroys her kingdom and leads to her death. Believing her rule as King was a failure, she appeals to the world to become a Heroic Spirit on her deathbed in order to seek the miraculous power of the Holy Grail and undo her time as King. Because of her self-depreciation, she ironically believes that she is not a very well-known hero.
Don't forget. Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you.
As long as you remember Her, you are not alone.
This is good, with the favorite anime/character thread, it's more of a list style thing, not too much room to elaborate, anyways, I have so many favorite characters. There are many factors that play into why I favor certain characters; charisma, development etc. but also very important, I have to relate to the character in some way. So maybe I can revisit this thread every now and then and add one or two whenever I'm motivated.
For this post, I want to talk about King Bradley/Wrath from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood as one of my all time favorite characters, particularly villains. I feel I do relate to him for a few reasons, one being I do have anger issues from time to time, I find myself becoming infuriated at times, but I rarely show it externally. I also find overall demeanor, the way I talk, and some of my actions are simular, there are other reasons, but this isn't about me, it's about the character.
So first of all, I like the fact that he is just as weak and frail as a normal human being, yet proved to be the most difficult of the homuculi to kill off - my theory is that he has enhanced agility, stamina and youth due to the philosopher's stone injected into his body, yet, he's still mortal. On top of that, he is a loving husband, as it's revealed that he does love his wife during his death scene, and since I'm on the subject, he dies with pride and dignity, in a way, he welcomed it, as if he knew it was inevidable that one day he would have to take responsibility and accept the consequences of his transgressions as a tyrannic ruler.
There are two other factors that play into him being one of my favorites:
One being that his character design, whether it was intentional or not was reminiscent of the image of Big Brother from 1984, some editions of the book have this image on the cover, and that was one of the first things I noticed. Add to that he has his "Ultimate Eye" to which he can see an opponent's weakness, or sees all, in a way this reminds me of the slogan; "Big Brother is watching." Considering many of Warth's actions, he is watching.
Lastly, the sin he represents which went hand in hand with his character development. On the surface he looks like a calm easy going individual, behind closed doors he reveals his rage buried within. However, as the series progresses his anger gradually escalates in intensity, for both the action and dialogue scenes he's involved in right up to the end when he says "I've finally arrived." Indicating that he has embraced his true self leading to his climactic battle. To me, what this represents is a study on the nature of anger, or wrathful behavior as a "pressure cooker" people over time take in more stress, or passively accept things that infuriate them; over time the result is an angry person who may react in an explosive manner.
That's all I have for now.
Well, I decided to get to talking about one of my favorite anime characters. I also like Erza Scarlet, but the character I'm gonna go with is...
Alucard from Hellsing!
Alucard is anime's pinnacle of awesomeness! Not only is he one of the most badass anime characters in history, he's also one of the most complex and three-dimensional. He's vicious, cruel, and sadistic, but there's a sympathetic side of him as well. He believes that monsters like him should be defeated by human beings. Not lesser monsters like the ones he hunts down, he's referring to the truly powerful monsters. And he remains loyal to Integra Hellsing because... Okay now we're entering spoilers. Let me set it up.
Plus, he delivers some of the best fight scenes in the entire franchise. Every fight scene he was in was a blast to watch. And I felt that sometimes, even the evilest of his deeds had some level of justification behind them. He could have been a bit softer with the SWAT team in OVA 3, but the reason he killed them was because they attacked him first and were after Seras Victoria as well, and that made him angry.
And speaking of that, even though he refers to Seras as his "servant," he's more of a father figure and mentor to her than a slave master, or even an employer. The relationship between the two is actually an essential part to the character development in the series.
And did I mention he's voiced by Crispin Freeman?
The Bird of Hermes Is My Name
Eating My Wings To Make Me Tame
Oh yeah, I watched up to OVA 8 because that's all I have right now - here's hoping Funimation get the last two OVAs - but the scene I really go nuts over:
I think that you forgot that Erza refuses to be so male-depending and almost never has her male comerades fight for her, but does encourage them to fight beside her. And after the Tower of Heaven arc, she would be coming to Jellal's rescue from time to time instead of the other way around.
