Using Naruto as an example, the filler arcs have a better leadup to the timeskip, and it develops some characters, like Hinata and Gaara. Shippuden's fillers also develop the likes of Aoba and Okisuke, plus it introduces Utakata before the World War.
I haven't finished Bleach yet, but the Bounts are brought up again later as part of Ichigo's character development.
Some of One Piece's filler is material that Oda couldn't put into the manga, like how Usopp got his goggles.

They flow decently enough. I watch Bleach mainly and haven't seen much of Naruto or One Piece. The Karakura Town Fight arc flowed pretty well even though the Zanpakuto Rebellion arc was inserted in the middle of Karakura Town Fight arc.

...So, I wasn't insane when they cut off right int he middle of the main story line in Bleach. I remember I was watching it on Toonami and before they started the reruns, it stopped RIGHT when Grimm got cut down and when it came back on, another story line was going on. I think that's what turned me away from Bleach.

Yeah Bleach has oddly placed fillers, but thats mostly because the Anime adaption always caught up with the manga too fast, thats one thing that I've always disliked about shonen in general, they think they have to make a filler every time they catch up with the manga, I mean they could just take a break instead, but meh. I mean again I enjoy filler for the most part,I mean despite what some say theres nothing wrong with coming up with fun original stories for shonen heroes & heroines, but I do feel modern shonen anime depend on it far to often at times. Maybe some company should go and adapt a U.S. comic in long running shonen, surely 20-75 years of content would keep them away from filler for quite awhile! XD
@Soundmonkey44. That would be cool! Take Batman for example and make it an anime. They would spend their entire lives trying to animate it and still not be done.
But for the most part, Bleach filler arcs have generally been interesting. I do agree that it's stupid to insert it in the middle of the storyline, but as long as it's placed at the right time, for example when a big fight is over and something major is resolved, then it's generally alright.

Yeah the random "Filler arc in random dimension X" was what made me stop Bleach too. That and the manga (for me) went downhill in general, but that's a different story....
I do remember my friend telling me that One Piece is notorious for having "recap arcs" instead of "filler arcs" .... like spend at least one season doing a recap from each character's POV... I wonder how Funimation will deal with that when the time comes...
For me, the only shounens that make filler flow and look good is Reborn! and FMA. (though Im not sure FMA can count since it can't be considered "long-running"?) The rest of the shounens....is...eh....I don't want to watch them. In Reborn's case, what people thought was "filler" was actually in the manga and what people thought was "in the manga" was actually filler, in a good way...XD

And unfortunately the creators normally just don't care, and that's a shame.
Fairy Tail has managed to get this far only having two filler arcs (one of which the creator wrote anyway) because Mashima puts out chapters quicker than most, or so I'm told.
I'm also told that Kubo always took/takes breaks when writing Bleach, which is probably why it has as much filler as it does.

There were 6 horrible episodes like that right before the fights with CP9, but certainly not entire seasons.
They know that less filler is necessary when they put out more material.
Now your just being silly, Manga-Ka are hard working men & women that put out content as fast as they are able to, Kubo & Others already get hassled about the quality of their works degrading or stagnating as is, if they did it any faster all it would do is cause the fans to whine even more. Plus with more cartoony (and I mean that in a good way not a bad way) Shonen like Fairy Tail & One Piece you have more content to put in an episode more often then note, slower more action based shonen usually get plowed through in the anime adaption as it doesn't always take as long to tell the story in animation as it does comics.
And yeah manga-ka don't really have as much say as they would like when it comes to the anime adaptions of their works more often then not.
It flows decently, but not quite as well.

It's not that they don't care, it's that they have no say in the matter on how the anime goes, unless they work with it.
