How do you feel about fan service?
I feel like its not only just so men and young boys have a reason to look at breast, butts, panty shots, etc. But it also gives a realistic feel to the anime. What do you think?

You sir have opened a can of worms. Now excuse me while I get my umbrella for the oncoming storm .

Yeah... I don't see this staying civil for very long, but who knows. Things could be different this time.
I don't think fanservice (for men or women) is very realistic, but that's just me. I like some fanservice if it's in moderation, but once it starts getting out of hand or becomes too much (for me, I realize others have different definitions of "too much") it begins to leave a sour taste in my mouth. Candy would be a good comparison. Delicious in moderation, but a giant stomach ache in excess.

Keeping it short. It has times when its funny and times when its unneeded. Otherwise I'm Sound on this. lol
I reject your reality and replace it with my own.
Oh no. Not this thread again.
*Climbs on soapbox and clears his throat*
---Ah, nevermind. Anyone who's been here a while already knows I'm not the biggest proponent of fanservice to say the least. I will say this though, I'm not entirely against it, but I am just about sick to death of it at this point. Subtlety is a lost art in the fanservice genre. Sometimes less is more, okay guys?
Also...
I dunno what kind of alternate version of reality you live in, but take me with you!
Don't forget. Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you.
As long as you remember Her, you are not alone.
@Soundmonkey - close the thread, I'm hiding in my bomb shelter until the storm passes.
My feelings of it, I'm cool with it, like anything else in anime there's stuff I like and dislike - just how it goes. I would go into more detail but I'm sort of at work now - so no long post from me for a while as much as I'd like to further explain my sentiments towards "fanservice," maybe later.
@Antearion - Like the signature - I feel the same way.

@Neon: No can do because I was just about to post my full post myself I was at class earlier, and typing on a cell-phone is a pain, but now i'm at home so I can let loose, you know I love media debates!
Anywho first off before I begin my big college Essay style rant, I want to make a few disclaimers.
1. Anything I say positive or negative about fan service/ecchi content in anime is solely MY OPINION, and is not meant to directly insult anyone. I fully respect people have the right to indulge in and enjoy what ever form of entertainment media they may want even if its something I or others find offensive.
2. I fully realize that sex, like violence is one of mans most base & primal instincts, something from which we can never truly escape or evolve out of as it both are crucial to life & survival, I also acknowledge that everyone has their own interests & fetishes both in real life & the realm of fiction. I myself am partial to red-heads, girls with darker skin tones, and women with heavy accents, especially british accents *what british accents are sexy XD*
Any who getting on to the bulk of my rant...
First off I want to touch on the OP's point of Fanservice making anime more realistic, honestly I have to say this is one of the biggest logical fallacies I have seen in awhile, calling fan-service realistic is like calling a youtube video of a cate exploding into rainbows realistic! In real life most of the men & women in these ecchi & harem titles would most likely end up being thrown in jail for various reasons *or at the very least getting multiple fines for public indecency XD*
I feel as if you are saying this out of a falsified concept of maturity, that is to say, you like many others may believe that what makes something adult or mature is having a fair amount of sexual or violent content within, this in fact is not true, the modern view of maturity is in fact a highly perverse and backwards view of such, true maturity is about doing your best to be a decent human being, trying to constantly over come the adversities of life while learning from the various mistakes & experiences had within, sex and violence while part of life, have very little to do with maturity, other then knowing when such acts are and are not appropriate, but instead overall are just again parts of our most primal nature, our ID. In all honesty many anime & cartoons aimed at all-ages/children audiences are much closer to the true meaning of maturity then most media (anime, toon, live action, etc) aimed at adults, thus the hilarious irony we have in modern day society, that being we are taught morals and lessons as children through various types of stories meant to help us throughout our life, but then as an adult are tought to throw them away in favor of what in essance is a false sense of adult-hood created by stereotypes based on age, gender, etc.
Sufficed to say Ecchi more often then not is anything BUT realisitc.
Overall Fanservice has always been part of japanese animation, just as sexual and violent content have always been parts of entertainment media in general, however this does not justify the excess amount of ecchi content we have seen from Japanese animation in the 21st century. When it comes down to it, the anime industry is using fan-service as a band-aid, they know they hare having financial troubles, and have to compete with things like illegal internet downloads, and well, just the internet in general. Because of this creative freedoms have been limited, instead of focusing on writing the best stories possible or the most entertaining stories possible, they just look for which ever fetish can make them a quick buck at the time, but again this is just a band-aid, it doesn't help heal the industry or the medium, in fact it just causes it to stagnate & degrade, I understand all forms of entertainment have good & bad times, and I can accept that overall anime is at a point where for the most part it is creatively bankrupt, or just not willing to take as many chances as when its economy was more stable, but in the end this over use of ecchi content in anime is NOT good for the industry or the medium in the long run, and solely depending on otaku/weeaboo for sales while it may be a safe bet, can't go on forever, the anime industry needs to try to re-conect with the masses both in Japan and abroad. Otherwise its future is grim!
So overall yes, while ecchi is not a good or bad thing in and of its self and can work well enough in moderation, and at times can be genuinely sexy, the dependance on it which the industry has grown on will most likely harm it in the long run. In fact it would probably do the anime industry a world of good to produce less shows a season/year and focus on quality over quantity, but admitingly asking for that in any entertainment medium these days is pretty much just kicking the can, you can say how much it needs to happen all you want, but odds are it'll never actually get to that point, *sigh*
So to put this whole big rant in layman's terms, sexy is fine in small doses, but as per usual, too much of a good thing is indeed a BAD THING!
All Will Know The Wonder Of My Dark & Jewled Sky, When All The World Is Wrapped In An Eternal Lullabye.
@Soundmonkey44 Thank you for opening my eyes. Me and my friend was talking about fan service. when I sayed realisitc what I was trying to say is if you don't put fan service in, thats fine. If you do, do it right. Guess you and my friend was right. Its not realistic. Thank you for posting a comment.

August is going to be great!
How in hell's name do you think any that crap is realistic?
1st off, have you seen Japanese woman with big breasts? No, because in a general, they're tiny people. If your going to have large breast, the lady is going have a larger body, not those tiny little sticks your staring at in those ecchi animes.
2nd, look that the damned sig of yours...how the hell do you think that is realist? Butts don't clench like that, sorry to break it to you.
3rd, watch High School of the Dead...breasts don't move like that! Breasts can not dodge bullets like how they were showing it as, both move at the same time, not 1 at a time.
Not to forget, you're not going to find a large chested woman running, you sure as hell won't find them doing sports. A woman with that chest size, they are in fact are uncomfortable (sometimes painful) to run when having a larger chest, so when they run, they use compression shirt to stop from bouncing (some also do it because they don't want perverted men watch them as running and watching them bounce and sports bras sure as hell don't do the job). Another fact, breasts are mostly made of fat, if your more active, your chest is bound to be smaller. You're not going to find star runner with a huge chest because they're more fit.
Oh..and 1 more thing. IT CAUSES BACK PROBLEMS!!! You can't be that tiny ass size with a tiny body, it's in n way possible, they'd be busting their back in real life and paying to get a breast reduction.

@Ant: Don't mention it, again not trying to hamper your ecchi enjoyment, just stating my opinion on the matter
All Will Know The Wonder Of My Dark & Jewled Sky, When All The World Is Wrapped In An Eternal Lullabye.
@ Vata - He's already changed his position saying it's not realistic, so there's no need to berate him like that. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, I seem to recall you're a proponent for some of your own that a lot of people here wouldn't like either. He, just like you, are entitled to those interests.
Anyway, I definitely wouldn't call it realistic either, and was going to say that you need to send me a postcard if you're in a world where rampant fanservice really is around every corner, Antearion.
I'm a fan of fanservice as well, not to the point I'm going to buy a show just because of or for it, but it can be amusing in the right show, as well as pleasing to the eye. Girls Bravo is a great example of both - it's got some good fanservice, and most of it is actually played for humor far more than titillation. It's one of the most insane, over-the-top shows I've ever seen, and I love it so. It's not afraid to 'go there', that's it's strength.
So yes, I'm a big fan of fan service, not to the point that I have it in my avatars or sigs like you, but I see nothing wrong with admitting when an anime girl is hot. My girlfriend does the same for anime guys, so it's an equal playground.
