I'm sorry Vata, but I am still not convinced, but, it's your money and your collection; it's your call as to want you want to do with it.
I'm only stating my opinion on the matter, I'm not trying to persuade anybody to do as I do.
But, I will admit, I do have a certain amount of vanity regarding my anime collection, it's petty on my part yes, but that's just me. I don't really have any other vices in my life (I don't drink or smoke or consume large quantities of food) and my hobbies (bass) can at times get pricy, but it's how I can afford the anime I buy - aside from bass(strings mostly - every few months), anime(blurays and wall scrolls) and living costs (the car mostly - insurance, gas, payments) I don't spend too much money, I mostly save it or try to invest it.
I will admit though, I am something of a cheapskate(it's how one can save money), I usually bounce between Amazon.ca, Amazon.com and rightstuf for my anime bluray shopping - I consider the face price of the product, but more importantly; I take into account shipping fees that may be incurred ordering stateside(rightstuf and Amazon.com) and there are also customs fees and the possibility of the shipment being delayed - like my last order. Sometimes, even though Amazon.ca has a higher price, it's cheaper than ordering from the state sites(due to extra shipping and customs costs) - and sometimes, although rare, Amazon.ca is cheaper or the same price, as was the case with Heaven's Lost Property, Berserk or the Inuyasha sets.
But, as I said, I am cheap; I did enjoy Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but I'm unwilling to pay the $120 for the total set (3 sets at $40 apiece) I can't justify spending that much on an anime I thought was good, but didn't blow my skirt up. I'd also like to have Sailor Moon, I didn't think it was great, but it was a fun watch, but I just simply will not pay an outrageous amount for it or buy a bootleg, for me it's just not an option.
But that's what I choose to do with my money and my collection - and I'm not implying I'm a better person for it, it's just how I do things.
And you know what, they can't get in trouble for it because they're printing OOP titles, no one on the R1 market owns them. if someone were to reprint them and put them on the R1 market at a decent price, then I'll be willing to buy them. But unless that happens, I'm sticking to my nice FX bootlegs.
If you truly believe that, you have no understanding of how the industry functions. If the market is flooded by cheap bootlegs, people won't buy a more expensive official set, even one that's higher quality.
While out of print merchandise doesn't support the original creators, at least it isn't helping to fund criminal organizations in China and other parts of the world. If you truly can't go without, it would honestly be better to download the fansubs and burn them to discs yourself.

And clearly, you have to understand NOT EVERYONE CAN STREAM AND DOWNLOAD. And sure as hell, not every damn OOP anime can be found and downloaded, and if you can, they're crap quality with awful colors in the font. I’ve seen fansubs, most are pretty awful. While I do know in fact FX hired a professional.

Stop combining different points Vata;
You buy a lot of anime products putting money into the market, this is a good thing.
You knowingly take part in a blatantly illegal act of purchasing bootlegged anime series, this is a bad thing.
People charge extremely high prices for OOP anime, while the ethics might be questionable it's completely legal, and has nothing to do with you.
Yes it's annoying that anime goes out of print and is extremely hard to pick up, and yes we're happy that you put money into the anime industry helping spur on future developments.
Still doesn't take away from the poignancy of you stealing from those who worked so hard to make the anime, thats on you to deal, just don't lie to yourself to make yourself come out as doing the right thing.
I used to download fansubs, I guess I got out of it when I could no longer logically justify my actions to myself, also the fact that I could buy many series legally and watch them instead of pirating them helped too. Sure I can't watch Nichijou or Binbou Shimai Monogatari, but I can watch Haibane Renmei and many many other great series.
