As an Erza Scarlet Fanboy I wouldn't really call her a Fanservice character. most of her "Skin showing" is just in transformations to different armors, But I do agree Fairy Tail has done a good job of balancing its female cast, sexy, but strong and decently to very well developed. Something arguably very few modern anime & manga manage to do.
Rolls eyes.
Hey, don't roll your eyes, you dunno where they'll land! *catches neons eyes, hands them back to him*

Okay, no eye roll, facepalm; but there are plenty of "sexy" anime girls that are also well written, strong, capable, chasmatic and just plain awesome. That's my position and I'm sticking to it.
There are indeed Plenty of sexy and capable, strong, awesome anime women, well in anime made from 1960-2004 that is *trollface*
Trying to be a troll are you, okay. But your listing should include right up to now, don't be stingy - lots of great anime women in the recent anime too, and they're in many of the different genres, you might not like some of the animes, but we can't deny the characters lack good development.
Anyways, I've gotten back to watching some anime, one or two episodes each day, I'm working on Moribito.
Anyways, one habit I do have, if I haven't mentioned it is the situation I'm in now, sometimes I'll juggle a few animes at a time when it comes to streaming - so I'm working on Haganai, Senran Kagura(although I haven't gone past the first episode yet) and one thing I have been meaning to start is Psycho-pass.
Well, I hope you're not entirely against fanservice.
I wouldn't say I'm totally against in all situations, but the way most modern anime do it really grinds my gears.
One anime that I think uses fanservice really well is Bakemonogatari. Rather than just having timeworn sight gags and boob jokes, Bakemono uses fanservice to accentuate mood, build characterization, make jokes that are actually funny, and even move the plot on more than one occasion. I guess by traditional definition, it wouldn't even count as fanservice, but that's just splitting hairs.
Fairy Tail on the other hand... mostly uses it to cynically pander to an older audience. It's tame enough for me to mostly ignore, but I still think the show could do without it. The only exception I think is Gray, who has an in-universe excuse to take his clothes off, and it actively effects his relationship with Juvia. I wouldn't mind it so much if Mashima confined it to the romantic subplots where it would make more sense. I mean, if you're going to sexualize your characters anyways, why not just use that to build on the romantic/sexual relationships that already exist between the characters? It's a lot less lazy and pandering that way.
@Renzo: Meh I don't think its pandering as it is Mashimia just likes to draw sexy women. Yes it would be just as good if it wasn't there, but as said its not to the extent it to where it can be daming as in other anime/manga series. At worst its just a vanilla tease. I've never been bothered by it, other then Lucy being a bit annoying at times.
And yes Gray's reason for stripping is hilarious! XD
Again, it's not as egregious in Fairy Tail as a lot of other series I can name. Not enough for me to drop it. In fact I own the combo sets Funimation put out. But would I mourn if the bath scenes and swimsuit episodes suddenly disappeared? Eh, not really. I think Erza is hot, and Wendy is adorable, but I'm not sure putting them in fetish outfits or various states of undress really exemplifies that in a way that's respectable to the characters. Besides, that's what rule 34 is for >.>
- Is...is that really Clark Miller as Tenchi? (I haven't gotten to the credits yet), as the wiki claims his 2nd VA didn't come in until his cameo in GXP. The new Ryoko voice just sounds terribly forced. Atleast Ayeka, and Sasami sound the same so far, Washu's sound the same but just older abit, as it's definently not her GXP voice to.
G Gundam - Episode 6
Damnit all Mark Gatha we miss you so much. It's good to go back and hear your awesome Domon that makes it tolerable to listen to his character unlike his games voice.

The reason it's in so many anime is because Fan service is TURBO-TASTIC.
