Re: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Disscussion Thread

Quote:
Yeah, anime tends to do that nowadays. But hey, if it means the show is a huge success in its own country, than all the power to 'em. I finished this show back in January so my memory is a little fuzzy, but I'll give you my two cents.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a dark show. It explores self-conflict and human desperation while still offering a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm not crazy about this show, but I can still appreciate it, as will you when you're finished watching. Madoka is all the rage as you said, and for good reason. It sets the standard for animation - not just anime. You can judge it however you like, but if you take the time to analyze it, you'll discover why it's become such a cultural phenomenon.

Yes, this early in the game there does not seem like too much going on to really analyze it(as I do with all my anime), or, at least, maybe when I get to the end it will tie it all together, however, I've seen clips of later scenes and I await when this series reaches that level of intensity. I can give it points for some innovative aspects, but when you say "standards" in animation, I do hope you don't mean every show being like this, as mentioned earlier, some of the intense scenes look and work very well, but some, honestly, look like someone threw up on my screen. Maybe it'll get better.

Speaking of great shows, and it has to do with the reason I replied, my computer started up by itself from sleep mode(weird) while I was watching Fractale - now that, is an awesome anime, I'm only 7 episodes in and I want to watch it again already, I mean, just, wow, that's all I can say, the character dynamic, the society, the visuals, the animation style and character design, just breathtaking, it keeps you wondering and eager, you can't take your eyes off it.

Anyways, there I go rambling away again.

@Renzo: I didn't mean that in a bad way you know

@Vata: I never said the word stupid, you did, somebody doesn't have much faith in themselves. Also, yeah not watching Utena because the dub is "Bad" (You do realize its over a decade old dub right!?) is just silly, the show is spectacular and also...not to be rude but Durarara, Spiral, Noein, while all entertaining well written series, not what I would call thought provoking...but hey different folks different strokes, so yeah. Your standards still seem pretty shallow & backwards to me, but meh, whatever.

Also I think we all know why No.6 got you hooked XD.

@Neon: Yeah the charter designs are bait cutsy-wootsty, but in a way that kind of helps IMO, seeing cute characters in a dark show, its a fun contrast.

Also, off topic, but HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALL!!! *I have a feeling I need to set my clock back an hour or is that tonight....hmm.* B

I doubt he took it that way.

I certainly don't. Not every anime can, or even needs to be like what we're discussing. I was just giving an example of why it's so well received. If I were one of those people that actually believed every anime should be like Madoka, would my favorite anime really be filled with such blatant fanservice?

But for the sake of staying on-topic, I won't go any further into that. I'm of the opinion however that your views of this anime won't change too much when you finish watching. Seeing 1/3 doesn't show you the whole thing, but at least it gives you an idea of what to expect. Unlike seeing 1/12 nervous

So what's this anime about again? Is it one of those magical girl anime series or something?

to go from Evengelion to this is sort of like watching A Beautiful Mind, Forest Gump or The Dark Knight and going to something like Good Burger or Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Really? I would argue that Madoka is much more competently written with vastly superior execution than Evangelion. Yeah, that must sound really weird coming from me.

Heck, you could probably write a dissertation on the use of foreshadowing in Madoka alone. To say nothing of the complex symbolism, allegories to eastern European folklore, and psychological themes.

Oh, I know what you meant. You're still wrong tongue

Yes. It's a Magical Girl series. No, it's not one of "those" Magical Girl anime. I can't really tell you any more without spoiling the surprise.

Edit: Boy, this thread really exploded! I'm glad so many people are interested in Madoka now /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\

I think it could work on Toonami. I have no idea how they'd handle promotion for it though...

I'm not sure. It could if the audience wouldn't write it off based on the character design. It'd be hard to promote, like Renzo said. And I'm not sure Toonami has the funds that AoA would probably ask for for a TV broadcast. At least not currently.

I would love to see Madoka get on TV and gain further popularity. It's possible that this could be the next big hit that Toonami really needs right now. I'm not sure if they'd be willing to take a chance with it though, at least not at the moment.

On another note: I've had Magia stuck in my head since this morning....
