Re: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Disscussion Thread

@Renzo: Those are some pretty sweet figures!

Anywho I watched the first two episodes dubbed, honestly I don't see what the complaints are about, the voices seem no more or less type-cast then the JP dub. I will admit though that Kyuubey sounds a bit off to me, I mean his voice seemed a bit more serious in the JP dub, he's a bit too cutesy in English, although I guess that could all be part of the act i'm sure he'll shine more later on as the show gets darker. Overall though its a solid dub, not spectacular, but solid none the less. I look forward to ordering the other sets when I can.

Yeah, I really like Figmas. Nice and customizable. Too bad they cost me as much as the LEs themselves nervous I'm hoping I can find Homura at a con somewhere.

I think with Madoka people were expecting a Cowboy Bebop quality dub just because of how much hype there was. I pretty much agree with JO's assessment of the dub. It's... fine. I think some of the dialogue is a little wonky, but the performances are fine. The casting is fine. But honestly, it's much less ambitious than I think Madoka deserved.

Awesome figures! I haven't gotten into the figure collecting thing myself (though some Makise Kurisu and Durarara!! figures had me just about ready to place some orders... but over $100 a figure was a bit much) but they look really nice. At $8 I would probably cave and buy them all....

And I don't get some of the hatred of the Madoka dub either. Sure it isn't knock-your-socks-off outstanding, but it's fine. It does its job, no more no less. My ears weren't bleeding while I was listening to it. Madoka probably did deserve a bit more from a dub, though.

I haven't listened to the dub in full, only bits and pieces on trailers. I can see where people are coming from, but they need to stop and really look at the characters before judging the dub: there are five tween girls and a cutesy furry creature. A few adults here and there, Sayaka's friend, and the musician. There's not much to work with, is there?

In other words, the anime is very moe. The English dub can only go so far with such limitations. It's also why we hear people complain about the K-ON dub; the English talent just can't match the Japanese. People might say that Madoka deserved better, but regardless of the studio I doubt it could have been better at all.

For how nice those figures are, if they cost you as much as the LE's of Puella Magi Madoka Magica you got a pretty good deal - those are the kinds of figures I try to buy - larger, more detailed, elegant. Now if I could just find a FMAB King Bradley/Wrath figure or a Brandon Heat GunGrave figure inthe same level of quality I'd be a happy customer.

Re: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Disscussion Thread

So, I have just finished the final episode of Madoka Magica.

And I have to say...this show is a masterpiece.

It's very uncomfortable a lot of the time, but it's unbelievably engrossing. The art direction, as I mentioned, is spectacular, utilizing the animation (which isn't as good as it could have been) to its absolute fullest. There's excellent staging and backgrounds as well, which is fitting, since this show's structures seems similar to a great tragic play. Musically...man. I don't think I'll ever get any of the music out of my head. It's all spectacular, and used really well in the context of the show, whether it's the ominous chanting theme used a lot, Kyubey's sinister musicbox-esque theme, and both the opening and ending songs.

I praised Chiwa Saito earlier, but I also have to give praise to Aoi Yuki, for making Madoka truly endearing, as well as Yuko Goto. Before this, I only knew her as Mikuru Asahina from Haruhi Suzumiya--and the voice she used for that role came close to giving me a migraine. doh! But she's fantastic as Junko, having just the right touch of firmness and love in her voice.

Something I really liked personally about this show was some of its themes. Similar to The Vision of Escaflowne (my personal favorite anime of all time), it explored selfishness--but not in an exaggerated way, like a lot of media. It shows how naturally selfish humanity can be without even realizing it.

Spoiler: Highlight to view
And episode 12 is really interesting in how it deals with that, how we can't rid ourselves of that alone, how we need someone perfect to die for us. It's...oddly Christian-sounding. At least, from my perspective
.

And leading into that, something I got from this anime was "Doing the right thing isn't always easy. Sometimes it can hurt you. But that doesn't mean you should walk away from it." How odd that this anime is often defined as a tragedy, and yet, it has such an uplifting message.

For most of the series, I really could only appreciate how masterful this show was done, but as of that last episode...I think I love this show. If Aniplex ever gives it a reasonable price, it's a definite buy.

@Looney:

But yeah, I agree with pretty much everything you said, the whole moral of doing the right thing isn't always easy *as well as the moral? That even a person who considers themselves normal/useless can have a fate that will greatly impart the world* were both pretty interesting. And yeah on the point of the whole Tragedy thing, I think that just attests to how well the series is written, that despite being labeled as a "Tragedy" and having a fairly melancholic ending it can still be uplifting.

Which again, after watching all of the series I do kind of worry about how the movies will play out since the third one will be new content, I mean yeah i'm sure it will be good, but depending on how they do it, it could potentially de-contsruct the series to a degree.

But ahh yeah, glad you enjoyed it Looney!

I agree.

That's because Madoka Magica is basically Faust: the anime.

Sadly, given Aniplex's track record, I doubt they will ever give anything a reasonable price. Those LEs are totally worth it, though. This show is just so... perfect that I had to own it. Like owning a piece of anime history.
