Well, Rightstuf.com just listed "A Certain Scientific Railgun" on their site. Release date is April 16, 2013 and it's DVD only.... Again
. Looks like Funimation will be giving Railgun the Limited-Edition-DVD-only treatment like they did with Idex. I bought the first season of Index and thought they did a good job with dubbing, (with some minor complaints). However, paying $70 for a DVD-only collection which barely has any extra features( would've preferred the special Index-tan episodes), just feels like Funimation trying to suck more money from my wallet. If this all they're gonna offer I am just going to wait the "eventual" Blue-Ray release. Sorry Mitoko.
How does everyone else feel about this?

Well you could pay about $400 for Railgun in Japan.
Plus, FUNimation does not currently have the Blu-Ray rights for the show.
This did not stop me from ordering the series, though the lack of Blu-ray is still a bit disappointing.
I would assume this being DVD-only, like Index's release, is due to Japan lacking a complete Blu-ray box-set of either Railgun or Index. Both series have eight individual Blu-ray volumes in Japan, but there are only DVD complete sets or half-season sets available currently. So this is not a worry about no Blu-rays even being available, it is simply the long wait for the Japanese licensor to allow FUNimation rights to distribute Blu-ray discs.
A second season of Railgun is set to air this year, along with the new Index movie, so maybe Blu-ray complete sets in Japan will finally be released which will then hopefully allow FUNimation a grace period to wait and then be allowed to sell the Blu-rays. This is currently the fate of Heaven's Lost Property: Forte. The Japanese Blu-ray box is set to release sometime this month, and FUNimation has their Blu-ray complete set of HLP:F set a few months later in June of this year.
All in all, if you want Blu-rays a person can wait over a year or more for FUNimation to be allowed to hopefully do so or that person can import the Japanese release.
tl;dr...Reverse importation fears are lame!
Amazon has the first part listed as a Blu-ray...Am I to assume that's just a misprint?
The Amazon link lists it as Blu-Ray but image shows only DVD and the Amazon.ca listing says it a regular edition DVD (the LE must have sold out at the warehouse level).
Yeah, right after my post I noticed the DVD label on the box image. But the format is listed as Blu-ray, it's even Region A/1, ya know? If you read the comments on one of the reviews, Amazon customer service certainly seems to believe it's real.
I mean I'm entirely doubtful that they're correct, it's just a tad confusing.
Typos on Amazon aren't uncommon. If you're uncertain, retailers that deal specifically with anime, like Right Stuf are more likely to have the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Yeah, the reason I came to ask was basically the fact that it wasn't listed on Rightstuf, and as said, Amazon customer service was apparently backing the listing. I've seen typos and incorrect listings on more than one occasion. But they usually fix it when pointed out.
So I guess I can just chalk this one up to misinformed customer service reps...not the first time I guess!
This had little to do with Geneon Funimation dint opt for the blu-ray for Index or Railgun when they picked it up because they said that these titles don't lend themselves well to blu-ray sells. Take it up with Lance he is the one that said it would not do well for Funimation to do these series on blu-ray.
