Why is funimation calling misaka bug zapper instead of sparky?
Seven Seas calls her sparky since that is what the fans had decided to translate bei bei as, and it works better in english.
Bug zapper doesn't make sense since a teen would not compare someone to a bug zapper however sparky is something that is somewhat common to call electrically superpowered people. also you wouldn't call a girl zapper, and he has always seen her as a girl, that is part of the reason she initially dislikes him.
Examples:
You've been calling me a zapper since we first meet VS You've been calling me sparky since we first meet.
so, zapper, you get remedial classes too (it should be got at 19:38 of episode 1 I think) vs so, sparky, you get remedial classes too
....and a zappy esper in the evening vs ....and a sparky esper in the evening
In eden of the east you guys named Pantsu Panties because one sub group chose to translate his name like that, so why is it that now you have to change the nick name that seven seas and fans of this show both agreed upon. I have been looking forward to this coming out since before it was announced, and can't wait for the dub but this along with the long wait just makes me depressed about your guys treatment of this series.

If i'm correct, wasn't she called "Shocker" in the original Japanese Novel's and Anime? I Think that would make more sense then "Zapper" or "Sparky".
If you can't find it, what makes you think I can?
I checked the copy of the novel I have on my computer and it just called her biri biri girl. I have heard shocker used before though (by mazui maybe), and I don't like it a lot, since it is a fairly masculine word but it is a lot better then zapper. why do you think it is better then sparky though

I personally think it's a pretty funny one. No real complaint.
Yeah, it did change the context a little bit [biri biri referring to the sound of buzzing electricity], but it does still keep along with the overall fit with her being an emitter of electricity.
This is just a minor nitpick I have, I'd prefer "Sparky" more, but Bug zapper is actually a better way of giving Misaka a nickname and insulting her at the same time XD
So, im for Sparky but Bug zapper kinda works.

I never thought he was trying to insult her especially since in the books he only calls her that until he finds out her name

I don't mind it at all. I have seen this anime quite a few times in the past, and if I remember correctly in the anime even though he finds out her name he keeps calling her, biri biri, which in my opinion always struck me as a insult.
Why not just keep it as "biribiri" and then just have a not on the video saying something to the effect of "Biribiri is an onamonapeia of the sound she makes" or something like that.
funimation translates eveything into english except well know anime jargon that does not have an english counter part to it.

On a similar note, I'm not enthused about the use of "sissy" for onee-sama.
Sissy Really Sis maybe but does anyone even say Sissy, I have never heard that before. also kuroko says that a TON it's going to be even more annoying then onea-sama also that is going to be really akward when she is telling her off, because she says it by itself in reverence, and when telling misaka off for (in her opinion) a bad idea, not to mention when she just says it normally. I thought zapper was bad but apparently episode X has a FAR worse editing decision.
